Albie Morkel, the former South African all-rounder, has expressed his immense pride and excitement over his brother, Morne Morkel, being appointed as the bowling coach of the Indian cricket team. In an exclusive interview with Mid-day, Albie shared his thoughts on Morne’s new role and the challenges he may face.

Albie Morkel highlights significance of coaching India’s bowling attack

Albie acknowledged the immens??e pressure that Morne would be under but expressed confidence in his ability to handle the challenge.

He emphasized the significance of coaching the Indian cricket team, stating, “It goes without saying that being on the Indian team’s coaching staff is probably the biggest responsibility or coaching job out there. The passion for the sport and the success that the team had in the past makes it a job with no room for error. He will be surrounded by some very good players who have achieved a lot, so I guess, for him, it’s a matter of earning their trust and believe that he can help to reach their full potential day in and day out.”

Admiring Indian bowling talents

When asked about the Indian bowlers, both past and present, that Morne might admire, Albie mentioned Zaheer Khan and Jasprit Bumrah.

He praised Bumrah’s exceptional skills adding, “Jasprit is the best all-format bowler in the world. He is very special and I’m sure Morne would love to work with him.”

Balancing technique and mental aspect

Albie stressed the importance of finding the right bala??nce between technical guidance and mental support for bowlers. He acknowledged the evolving nature of the game and the need for bowlers to focus on both aspects. Albie highlighted the significance of mental strength in sustaining longevity in the sport.

“It’s a fine line between being too technical and what’s right. I think the game has changed so much over the last decade. Younger bowlers or bowlers who struggle with injuries probably need more technical work, and after that it’s about fine tuning what you have. The mental aspect becomes very important then to sustain longevity,” said Albie.

Experience and communication skills

While Albie hasn’t worked closely with Morne on a coaching level, he believes that his vast experience in various bowling situations will be invaluable. He emphasized the importance of Morne effectively communicating his knowledge and insights to the Indian bowlers.

Albie told “I haven’t worked with him on that level, but what he has is a lot of experience in most situations that the bowlers might encounter. If he applies that in his coaching and find ways to communicate that in a way that makes sense, he will add a lot of value.”

Albie concluded by expressing his hope for Morne’s success in his new role. He believes that Morne’s expertise and dedication will make a significant contribution to the Indian cricket team’s continued success.

Johannes Albertus Morkel, better known as Albie Morkel, the former South African all-rounder is celebrating his 42nd birthday on June 10. Albie, recognized as a potential successor to Lance Klusener from a young? age, gained fame?? for his exceptional talent in hitting sixes and his adeptness in medium-pace bowling.

Irrespective of the formats, the southpaw never shied away from attacking the bowlers with so much ease. One of his standout and unforgettable moments came during the 2012 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. A??lbie displayed an exceptional performance by mercilessly atta?cking Virat Kohli, smashing the Delhi-born cricketer fo?r a remarkable 28 runs in a single over.

It happened in the thrilling match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) when CSK needed 43 off the last two overs. The then RCB skipper Daniel Vettori handed over the ball to Kohli as he had only two options left in the form of Raju Bhatkal, who had conceded 35 runs in his two overs and Chris Gayle.

Morkel displayed his dominance by taking Kohli to task, launching three gigantic sixes and two fours in an over which cost RCB as many as 28 runs. The ‘Yellow Army’ capitalized on this momentum and ultimately emerged victorious in the match by successfully chasing down the required 15 runs in the final over, which was bowled by Vinay Kumar.

Here is the video:

Morkel made his international debut for South Africa in December 2004 in an ODI against Zimbabwe. He went on to play a total of 58 ODIs,?? scoring 782 runs at an average of 23.06 and taking 50 wickets with his bowling.

In T20Is, Morkel played 50 matches for South Africa, scoring 572 runs at an average of 21.18 and taking 26 wickets. He was a valuable all-rounder for the team in the shorter format of the game. He also had a successful domestic career for the Titans in South Africa’s domestic circle. Morkel announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in January 2019, ending a career that spanned more than a decade.

Whenever the discussion regarding Virat Kohli’s most memorable moments in Indian Premier League (IPL) takes place, it can’t be completed without mentioning the embarrassing over bowled by him. In that over, Kohli was destroyed mercilessly by former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Albie Morkel. The former South African smashed 28 runs in Kohli’s over and converted the lost battle into a victory.

Now, after yea?rs of the popular battle, Morkel has recalled the incident and dropped his thoughts saying that the win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had a massive impact on his career and the team. Morkel still wonders why RCB gave Kohli that crucial over.

“Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had the game in their bag. I have no idea why they bowled Virat. All respect to him, he shouldn’t have bowled that over anyway. We lost a wicket in the last ball of the 18th over,” Morkel said on a chat show for CSK.

In that game, CSK needed 43 off the last two overs when the then RCB skipper Daniel Vettori handed over the ball to ??Kohli. In fact, Vettori had only two other options left in the form of Raju Bhatkal, who had gone for 35 runs in his two overs and Chris Gayle.

Morkel took Kohli to the cleaners, smashing three gigantic sixes and two fours in an over which cost RCB as many as 28 runs. The ‘Yellow Brigade’ then went on to win the contest after successfully scoring 15 runs in the last over bowled by Vinay Kumar.

While reminiscing the episode, Morkel said that when he came to bat his team needed plenty of runs. The southpaw stated that ?when he saw Kohli, he thought that this over could bring some runs if he connects the ball well.

“The 19th and 20 were left. We needed 43 off 2. I walked in at No. 7. You look at the scoreboard, and you’re like ‘oh no, 40-odd off 2, that’s impossible’. You walk in, and then you see Virat’s bowling then I thought ‘if I can connect a few, maybe we can get close’, added Morkel.

Morkel said when his side got 28 runs from Kohli’s over followed by 15 in Vinay’s, the vibe that he felt on the ground was magical.

“I think I edged the 1st one for four that just missed my stumps. I edge another one just went over the short third man. I started hitting it straight, and we eventually got 28 and ended up winning the match with Bravo hitting a couple in the next over. That moment lasted about 15 minutes in my career. It is magical to look back at. I remember the vibe at the ground,” Morkel added further.

In recent years, South African cricket has been severely hit with the mi??gration of their main players to the?? United Kingdom with the signing of Kolpak Deal.

The likes of Kyle Abbott, Rilee Rossouw, Colin Ingram, and David Wiese have penned down on the deal, which has left an enormous void in South Africa’s domestic system.

In the presence of reservation policies in the national selection based on colour, many cricketers find it financially via??ble to make a move north in search of greener pastures.

Both the Morkel brothers, Albie and Morne, signed the deal to play county cricket during the twilight st?ages of the career.

However, Albie believes that the Brexit of the UK from the European Union would mean a fall throug?h for Kolpa??k Deal.

“Well, I think, England went the Brexit route so Kolpak will fall away. So most of the SA guys have one more season in England, I think. They can’t qualify lest they sign as an overseas player. I think we will get a few guys back into our system,” Morkel told Sportstar.

The explosive batting all-rounder reckoned that the core of pace battery had been hampered with the retirement of his brother Morne, Dale Steyn, and Vernon Philander.

But, Morkel also believes that the like??s of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi to cover up for the huge void left by Steyn.

“The core head of the bowling department is gone with Dale Steyn [retired from Tests], Morne and Vernon Philander. Kagiso Rabada has shown that he is capable of filling their boots, so is Lungi Ngidi, but the only concern will be their fitness,” added the 38-year old.

Amongst the young Turks withi??n the South African pace system, Morkel found Anrich Nortje as an exciting prospect??.

“The body needs to get used to a lot of bowling. They are all good new-ball bowlers. Anrich Nortje is a young exciting prospect,” concluded Morkel.

Albie Morkel, former South Africa all-rounder who enjoyed a formidable stint at Chennai Super Kings (CSK), recently heaped praise on MS Dhoni’s astute leadership skills.

Under MSD, Morkel pl??ayed 78 matches, scoring 827 runs, with a tally of 76 wickets. The big-hitting left-hander achieved a top score of 71 and registered best bowling figures of 4/32?.

With Morkel, Dhoni clinched the trophies of IPL in 2010 and 2011 and entered into numerous finals. However, he could not replicate his heroics for Royal Challenger Bangalore (CSK) in the subsequent ed?itions of the tournament.

“Dhoni plays a big role. We all know how big Dhoni is in India, and the brand of cricket he plays. He is one of the best T20 and white-ball players ever to play the game, and if you get him as a leader, it is going to bring success as he knows how to get the best out of his players,” Morkel told Sportstar.

More importantly, Dhoni formed a nucleus around CSK involving several superstars featuring Dwayne Bravo, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Smith, and? Brendon McCullum.

“It all comes from keeping your core group of players together for a long time and have the same captain, Dhoni, for all seasons except for the two years when they weren’t part of the competition,” continued Morkel.

CSK, as a result, has won three IPL titles in history, including a win during their heroic comeback in 2018. “Consistency is their secret. Over the last few seasons, they have made the finals eight times out of 10,” concluded Morkel.

South Africa will compete against hosts India in a three-match ODI series starting March 12. The last time the Proteas toured India? for a bilateral ODI series was in 2015. The tourists won that series 3-2. South Africa, however, have lost eight of the 10 ODIs against India since then.

The Proteas, ??who have a relatively new head coach in former wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher, recently whitewashed Australia 3-0 in the 50-overs format at home. The Men in Blue, meanwhile, lost an ODI series to the Black Caps 3-0 in New Zealand.

“It was sort of a mixed summer before the new coaching staff took over. Obviously, they had a fantastic win against Australia in the ODI series, after losing the T20 series badly. So, I’m unsure,” Morkel was quoted as saying in Sportstar.

India will win 2-1 according to Morkel

“Even if a team is in top form, beating India in India is almost an impossible task. It’s going be a tough series for them, but I do expect them to at least compete. India will win it 2-1, but South Africa should compete, especially now that they have the confidence after the series against Australia,” Morkel added.

Overall, India and South Africa have met 84 times in ODIs with the Proteas having a 46-35 lead while three games ended without a result. India’s last series in the rainbow nation saw them winning a six-match series 5-1.

Morkel, who played one Test, 58 ODIs and 50 T20??Is between 2004 and 2015, will be playing his first match in the Road Safety World Series on Wednesday when the South Africa Legends take on the West Indies Legends in Mumbai. They will then play two back-to-back games on March 13 (against Sri Lanka) and March 14 (vs India) before taking on Australia on March 19.
