In Match 13 of The Hundred Men’s Competition 2024, Southern Brave‘s Akeal Hosein made headlines not just for his bowling but for his unique celebration. During the game at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Hosein celebrated a crucial wicket by mimicking football legend Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘nap?celebration, much to t????he delight of the crowd.

Akeal Hosein channels Cristiano Ronaldo

Hosein’s moment of brilliance came on the 17th ball of the Birmingham Phoenix innings. The left-arm spinner delivered an arm ball that extracted extra bounce from a good length, causing Aneurin Donald to edge it to short third man, where Jofra Archer took a sharp catch. After claiming Donald’s wicket, Hosein celebrated with Ronaldo’s signature ‘nap?move, adding a touch of football flair to the cricketing arena. Donald’s dismissal, after scoring 7 runs off 6 balls, left Phoenix at 33/1.

Southern Brave’s strong start

Batting first, the Brave’s openers Alex Davies and James Vince set a solid foundation with an 81-run partnership off 46 balls. Davies was eventually dismissed by Benny Howell for 30. Leus du Plooy had a brief stint at the crease, falling to Sean Abbott for 9 runs.

Vince continued to anchor the innings, forming a formidable 68-run partnership with Kieron Pollard. Vince’s explosive innings of 90 runs off 47 balls included six fours and six sixes, while Pollard contributed an unbeaten 38 off 22 balls, propelli?ng the Brave to a c??ompetitive total of 169/2 in their 100 balls.

Birmingham Phoenix’s chase and Brave’s bowling masterclass

In response, the Phoenix had a strong start with Ben Duckett lea?ding the charge. Duckett raced to a 21-ball half-century, taking?? Phoenix to 92/1 after 49 balls, keeping the game balanced.

However, a pivotal moment came with Chris Jordan’s tight bowling, resulting in Liam Livingstone’s dismissal, caught by du Plooy at point. This wicket triggered a dramatic collapse, as Brave’s bowlers – Jordan, Craig Overton, Archer, Hosein and Tymal Mills – combined to take five wickets for just five runs in 18 balls.

Phoenix’s collapse and Brave’s victory

Despite Duckett’s valiant effort, scoring 68 runs with eight fours and five six?es, the rest of the Phoenix lineup?? struggled, managing only four boundaries between them. The collapse saw Phoenix lose their way, ultimately falling short by 32 runs. This victory underscored the Brave’s robust bowling attack and strategic acumen, sealing a memorable win in a tightly contested match.

In a match curtailed by rain, the San Francisco Unicorns emerged victorious over the Washington Freedom by six wickets in the Major League Cricket at Dallas on Sunday. The Unicorns chased down a revised target of 177 runs in 13.4 overs, with Sanjay Krishnamurthi’s unbeaten 79 being the cornerstone of their chase. However, the highlight of the match was undoubtedly Akeal Hosein’s dismissal of Finn Allen for a golden duck.

Akil Hossein’s deadly delivery

While Krishnamurthi’s inning was undoubtedly crucial, Hosein’s dismissal of Finn captured everyone’s attention. Allen, known for his aggressive batting, came to the crease with high expectations. However, Hosein had other plans.

The left-arm spinner delivered a skiddy delivery that came into the right-hander. Allen, looking to pull, was deceived by the pace and trajectory of the ball. The delivery crashed into the middle stump, leaving Allen stunned and Washington’s d??ugout in jubilation.

Hosein’s dismissal of Allen was a crucial breakthrough for Washington. It put a dent in the Unicorns?batting lineup and gave the Freedoms a much-needed early advantage. The wicket also showcased Hossein’s skill and ??ability to deliver under pressure.

San Francisco Unicorns ends the winning streak of Washington Freedom

The Freedom, batting first, managed to post a respectable total of 174 runs for the loss of three wickets in their allotted 15.3 overs. Steve Smith and Travis Head both contributed half-centuries, but the innings lacked the momentum they needed. Corey Anderson was the pick of t??he Unicorns?bowlers, finishing with figures of 2 f??or 20.

The Unicorns?chase started off under immense pressure, losing openers James Frazer-Mcgirk and Allen, both early in the second innings, with the sheer determination and intent of Josh Inglis and Krishnamurthi putting on a 70-run stand. Inglis made a qui??ckfire 45 before being dismissed, but Krishnamurthi continued his assault on the Freedom bowlers. He remained unbeaten on 79, guiding his team to victory with four balls to spare.

The victory for the Un?icorns was a significant one, as it helped them consolidate ??their position in the points table. The Freedom, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their performance and will need to regroup for their next match as it ended the winning streak for them facing their first loss of the tournament.

In a historic feat, Akeal Hosein etched his name in the annals of ICC T20 World Cup history, delivering a spellbinding performance against Uganda. The left-arm spinner registered the best figures for a West Indies bowler in the tournament, scalping an impressive 5/11 in four overs. Opening the bowling for the team, Hosein played a pivotal role in West Indies’ resounding victory by 134 runs in the Group C encounter at Providence Stadium, Guyana.

Johnson Charles and Andre Russell lead the charge

Choosing to bat first, West Indies showcased their batting prowess with a commanding display against Uganda. Brandon King and Johnson Charles laid a solid foundation, setting the stage for a formidable total. Charles anchored the innings with a well-compiled 44 runs, supported by valuable contributions from Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell and an explosive cameo from Andre Russell. Their collective effort propelled the West Indies to a formidable total of 173/5 in their ??al??lotted 20 overs.

Brain Masaba shines for Uganda

Uganda’s bowlers toiled hard to contain the flow of runs against a formidable West Indian lineup. Despite efforts from Brian Masaba (2/31) and early breakthroughs from Alpesh Ramjani and Dinesh Nakrani, Uganda struggled to maintain consistency. They faced an uphill battle against the onslaught from the West Indies’ batters and couldn’t prevent them from posting a daunting total.

After losing their opening game against Scotland in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022, West Indies bounced back and defeated Zimbabwe at Bellerive Oval in Hobart o?n Wednesday to keep their hopes alive in ?the multi-team tou?rnament.

The Nicholas Pooran-led side managed to post a competitive total of 153/7 on the board in 20 overs. Opener Johnson Chares top-scored with 45, but the real impetus came from Rovman Powell (28) and Akeal Hosein (23 no), who help??ed Wi??ndies get past the 150-run mark.

Powell smashed a couple of sixes during his stay, and one of those sixes was a 104m monster shot that went outside the ground. It all happened on the third delivery of the 20th over bowled by Blessing Murzarabani.

The right-arm pacer went for short delivery, and Powell clobbered it 14 meters out of the ground over midwicket for a massive six. The insane hit left Powell’s teammate Hosein shell-shocked. Hosein, who was at the non-striker’s end, couldn’t believe his eyes and was left totally dumbfounded with the dazzling shot of Powell.

Here is the video:

After posting 153/7, the Men in Maroo?n produced a phenomenal performance with the ball, packing Zimbabwe for 122 and win??ning the contest by 31 runs.

The bowling duo of Alzarri Joseph and Jason Holder did t??he damage, with Joseph bagging four wickets for just 16 runs in his quota of 4 overs while Holder picked up three scalps for 12 in 3.2 overs.

“It is very encouraging, but the job is not done. We have another game and have to win it to get to the main tournament. It is all about pulling it back for the team, trying to get an early wicket, and, if not, keep it tight. With the new ball, it (the conditions) was pretty good, but it still was a good wicket for cricket. All in all, happy with the performance, and the team put in a big effort today,” said Joseph at the post-match presentation.
