St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SKP) won the 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title by defeating Saint Lucia Kings (SLK) in the summit clash ??at Warner Park in B??asseterre on Wednesday.

Batting first, the Andre Fletcher-led side posted a competitive 159/7 on the board in their stipulated 20 overs. Chasing 160 for victory, St Kitts lost the wicket of swashbuckling opener Chris Gayle for a four-ball duck in the very first over.

Evin Lewis too departed early, but young Joshua da Silva steadied the ship with all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford, adding 45 runs for the third wicket stand. After their dismissal in successive overs, Dominic Drakes stepped up for the Patriots.

Drakes’ single-handedly took his side for the finish line by smashing a quickfire 48 off 24 balls. With the win, Patriots also clinched their maiden CPL trophy.

Naseem Shah lost his cool on Keemo Paul

SKP pacer Naseem Shah gave the Kings all-rounder Keemo Paul a fiery send-off after dismissing him for a brisk 21-ball 39. It all happened on the penultimate ball of the first innings. The 18-year-old Shah bowled a slower delivery on the middle stump, and the right-h??anded b?atsman tried to send the ball out of the park.

But Paul couldn’t time the ball well and was caught comfortably by substitute fielder Jonathan Carter. While the batsman started walking back to the dugout, Shah stared at him with a lot of aggression and pointed a finger towards the pavilion. Even Paul looked back at the youngster, and both the players exchanged a few words.

The 2021 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) started on Thursday with a double-header where the first game was played between Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) and Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), while the second fixture took place between St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots (SNP) and Barbados Royals (BR).

In the opening game, the War?riors defeated reigning champions Knight Riders by nine runs courtesy of brilliant performances by Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, Imran Tahir and Odean Smith.

Put to bat first, Hetmyer scored a remarkable half-century to take his team’s total to 142/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Hetmyer smashed 54 runs off 41 balls with the help of six boundaries, including two sixes. Sunil Narine (2/17) and Akeal Hosein (2/17) were the pick of the bowlers for Knight Riders.

In reply, the Kieron Pollard-led side could only manage to reach 133/9, losing the contest by nine runs. The trio of Shepherd, Tahir and Smith bowled outstandingly well to help the Warriors defend the paltry total. While Shepherd took three scalps for 15 runs in 3 overs, Tahir bagged a couple for 12 runs in his quota of 4 overs. Similarly, Smith picked up two wickets for 10 runs in 2 overs. Dinesh Ramdin, with 28 of??f 25 balls, was the top scorer for? TKR.

In the second fixture, the Patriots registered a co??mfortable victory over the Royals by 21 runs.

Asked to bat first, the Patriots posted a massive 175/5 on the scoreboard in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to crucial knocks by Sherfane Rutherford and captain Dwayne Bravo.

After ??losing four wickets for just 39 runs, Rutherford and Bravo steadied the ship and put toget?her a scintillating partnership of 115 runs for the fifth wicket.

Rutherford scored ??53 from 43 deliveries, including 2 fours and 4 sixes. On the other hand, Bravo remained unbeaten at 47 runs off 35 balls with the help of five boundaries, including four maximums.

In response,? the Royals scored 154 runs with a loss of seven wicket??s in their stipulated 20 overs, losing the contest by 21 runs.

Dominic Drakes was the main highlight in the bowling, who picked up a couple of scalps by just conceding 13 runs in his quota of 4 overs. Sheldon Cottrell also bagged two wickets, but he was way too expensive, giving away 39 runs in 4 overs. Shai Hope was the top scorer for the Royals. He made 44 runs from 38 deliveri?es.

The 24th game of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 saw a one-sided-contest between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SKP) and Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) on Wednesday.

The game had little relevance to the tournament as table-toppers TKR have already qualified for the semi-finals. Meanwhile, bottom-placed side SKP are out of the contention fo??r the knockout stage of the competition.

Both team still tried to entertain the spectators by bringing out their ‘A’ game. Knight Riders rested their marquee players Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard for the match.

It turned out to be ‘the Lendl Simmons show’ who announced his return to prime form with an impressive knock of 96. He was unfortunate to miss out on his ton.

The Patriots did not have enough ammunition to challenge the target set by the Knight Riders and lost the game by 59 runs. It was their seventh defeat in the tournament.

Cottrell hit the bull’s eye

Well, there ?was one moment of brilliance for the Patriots which came in the form of a run-out.

In the third over of TKR’s innings, fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell bowled a well-directed short ball at Amir Jangoo‘s ribs.

The left-handed batsman could only flick the ball towards mid-wicket and attempted to steal a quick single. On his followthrough, Cottrell raced towards the ball and positioned himself well for a bullet-throw at the non-striker’s’ end.

Cottrell managed to hit the stumps directly and Jangoo’s miscalculation proved costly. The West Indies’ international’s effort turned out to be one of the highlights of the day.

Here’s the video:

Subsequently, a monumental 144-run partnership between Simmons and Darren Bravo helped the Knight Riders to post 174 on the scoreboard

Chasing 175, Patriots had no answer to the spin trap laid by TKR. The trio of Pravin Tambe, Akeal Hossain and Sikandar Raza helped the TKR restrict the Patriots to 115, for the loss of seven wickets.

At the midway stage of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020, St Lucia Zouks (SLZ) faced off against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SKP) in the reverse fixture.

Last time the two teams met ??each other, SLZ snatched a 10-run win ove??r SKP. The encounter threatened to be a rain-infested one.

SLZ captain Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bowl first, e?xpecting DLS method t?o play a role later.

Beginning the proceedings, the SKP batsmen had no answer to a superlative spell from Mohammad Nabi who’s proving to be unstoppable in the tournament.

The Afghan veteran reduce??d the Patriots to 11-4 in the third over, removing all the big guns of their lineup.

Nabi ended up with a five-wicket haul and con??ceded only 15 runs in his four-over spell. He was well supported by his teammates who kept chipping in with wickets at regular intervals.

By the end of 20 overs, Patriots could only register a paltry total of 110 for the los??s of nine wickets.

Chasing 111, Rahkeem Cornwall gave a flying start to the Zouks with his 11-ball 26. After a brief halt due to rain, Najibullah Zadran (33) and Roston Chase (27*) completed the formalities with their fin??ishing knocks.

In hindsight, it turned out to be a one-sided contest as Zouks clinched their fourth win in the tournament with a 6-wicket win and 32 balls to spare.

Nabi was presented with the ‘Player of the Match?for his game-changing spell. Meanwhile, the Patriots still languish? at the bottom of the t??able with a solitary win in five games played, thus far.

The Zouks meet Barbados Tridents (BT) next on Sunday, August 30, wh??ile the Patriots meet the Jamaica Tallawahs (JT) a day before.
