The Indian cricket landscape is buzzing with unparalleled excitement following the historic national call-up of 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi. After a breathtaking Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season where he smashed 776 runs to claim the coveted Orange Cap, Suryavanshi has been fast-tracked into India’s T20I squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games.

His selection has captured global headlines, with the British media particularly eager to witness the teenage sensation on UK soil. While Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar noted that the youngster’s sheer weight of runs left the selection committee with no option but to pick him, stepping into international cricket at such a tender age brings immense pressure. As a new era begins under full-time T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, cricket pundits and legendary figures are chiming in on how India should handle this generational talent.

Kapil Dev opens up on his expectations from 15-Year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Amidst the raging euphoria, India’s iconic first World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev, has urged fans and the media to maintain a grounded approach. Speaking to PTI, the legendary all-rounder emphasized that while Suryavanshi’s raw potential is undeniable, burdening a 15-year-old with sky-high expectations could backfire.

He is a special talent, give him time, but he has definitely shown the talent he possesses, I think he is unbelievable, but again, he will have to conduct himself in the Indian team, keep himself fit, and many other things will follow,” Kapil Dev stated.

Kapil highlighted that international cricket demands strict discipline and mental fortitude beyond just technical skills. “How focused he remains, only he can answer, but to me, he is a special talent… There is nothing wrong with giving respect to the young kid, but expecting too much at this stage would be wrong,” he added.

Managing the pressure on India’s youngest cricket prodigy

Dev is not alone in voicing caution. Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of shielding the teenager from overwhelming public scrutiny. Suryavanshi is currently cuting his teeth with the India A squad in Sri Lanka for a 50-over tri-nation series involving Afghanistan A, proving his rapid transition through the ranks.

Recognizing the psychological and emotional challenges of dealing with sudden global fame, the BCCI has proactively stepped in. In an unprecedented and highly supportive move, the board has permitted Suryavanshi’s parents to accompany him on the gruelling UK tour. This gesture is aimed at helping the youngster acclimatize to English conditions while providing a familiar emotional anchor away from home.

Furthermore, Suryavanshi may not be rushed into the playing XI immediately. India’s T20I opening slot remains heavily guarded by Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, both of whom played pivotal roles in India’s recent T20 World Cup triumph. As the Men in Blue kick off their series against Ireland on June 26, the focus will remain on nurturing Suryavanshi for the long haul, ensuring his transition from an IPL wunderkind to an international stalwart is handled with utmost care.
