The high-stakes intensity of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) has once again spilled over from the cricket field onto digital platforms, revealing the darker side of modern sports fandom. Following a fiery on-field exchange and a highly scrutinized post-match handshake snub involving Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) icon Virat Kohli and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Travis Head, the Australian cricketer’s family has found themselves at the epicenter of a massive cyberbullying wave. Breaking her silence on the distressing aftermath, Travis Head‘s wife, Jessica Head, has spoken out against the relentless toxicity, calling for a shift in perspective among passionate cricket enthusiasts.

Speaking directly to the Australian media outlet The Advertiser, Head detailed the overwhelming nature of the online backlash, revealing that the trolling extended far beyond her husband to innocent bystanders in their personal circle.

It feels like a repeat of the abuse that happened after the World Cup. I woke up to my socials blasting… we are fine, but they are attacking my friends and family,” Jessica shared.

The reference to the 2023 ODI World Cup highlights a frustrating pattern where sections of toxic social media users resort to personal attacks following cricket rivalries. Emphasizing that sports should not act as a catalyst for real-world hatred, Jessica urged the global sporting community to foster empathy and look at the actual individuals who bear the brunt of online toxicity.

I think across all sports at the moment there’s an important conversation around mental health, perspective and the way we speak to one another. Passion will always be part of sport, but so is remembering there are real people and families behind the game. Hopefully, this encourages more kindness and support for one another,” she added, pleading for a healthier boundary between on-field entertainment and off-field respect.

The incident of no handshake between Head and Kohli

The entire controversy erupted during the high-voltage IPL 2026 clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium last Sunday. Tensions flared during Bengaluru’s pursuit of a massive 256-run target set by a dominant SRH batting lineup.

During the RCB innings, a mic-d up and deeply expressive Kohli engaged in an animated verbal clash with Head, utilizing fiery gestures and heated words. The friction only compounded after Kohli was dismissed cheaply for 15, with Head reportedly offering a quick retort on the field. However, the boiling point for fans occurred during the traditional post-game custom. Video clips quickly circulated showing Kohli entirely bypassing an extended hand from Head during the post-match line, walking directly past the Australian opener while continuing to shake hands with other SRH players, including captain Pat Cummins.

Following this public handshake fallout, a toxic cross-section of internet users began a targeted campaign against the Australian star. Both Head and Jessica saw their respective Instagram posts flooded with highly distasteful comments and abusive remarks. Despite SRH securing a massive 55-run victory in the match, the conversation remains firmly fixed on the online abuse, spotlighting the critical need to address digital player safety and mental health in top-tier sports.
