Australia have announced fresh-looking squads for their upcoming white-ball assignments in the subcontinent, with several senior stars rested and a new generation of talent earning opportunities ahead of a busy international season. The tours include a three-match ODI series against Pakistan followed by ODI and T20I contests in Bangladesh across May and June 2026.

Mitchell Marsh will captain all three squads. The selectors have instead opted for a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging names as they continue building combinations for the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.

Pace trio to miss due to IPL commitments

Australia will also be without their famed pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood for the entire subcontinent tour, with the selectors opting to manage the workloads of the senior quicks during the ongoing IPL season. Several Australian stars are currently involved in the business end of the tournament, forcing Cricket Australia to reshuffle the squads and provide opportunities to fringe and emerging players ahead of a packed international calendar.

Fresh faces rewarded after strong domestic season

The biggest talking point from the announcement was the inclusion of three uncapped players — Ollie Peake, Liam Scott and Joel Davies — all of whom have impressed heavily in domestic cricket over the last year.

Teenage batter Peake, who captained Australia at the 2026 Under-19 World Cup, has earned a maiden call-up for the ODI series against Pakistan. The talented youngster has rapidly climbed through the ranks and recently featured for Australia A, strengthening his reputation as one of the country’s brightest prospects.

All-rounder Scott has been selected for both ODI squads after an outstanding Sheffield Shield campaign in 2025/26, where he was named Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Davies’ explosive performances in the Big Bash League, where he finished as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, have secured him a place in the Bangladesh T20I squad.

IPL commitments force changes for Bangladesh leg

Australia’s ODI squad for Bangladesh will look significantly different from the one touring Pakistan due to ongoing IPL commitments. Several players currently involved in the IPL playoffs are expected to join the national setup later in the tour. Travis Head, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis and Xavier Bartlett will replace Peake, Billy Stanlake, Riley Meredith and Matt Short once the team moves from Pakistan to Bangladesh.

The selectors appear keen to manage workloads while also ensuring key players remain available for crucial IPL matches before returning to international duty. Fast bowlers Stanlake and Meredith also earned recalls to the ODI setup, marking significant returns after battling injuries and inconsistent opportunities over recent seasons.

No place for Glenn Maxwell in T20I unit

Another notable development was the absence of Glenn Maxwell from the Bangladesh T20I squad. Maxwell, who recently retired from ODI cricket, was not considered for the shortest-format series either, signalling Australia’s continued transition toward younger players in white-ball cricket. Experienced names such as Head, Green, Josh Inglis, Adam Zampa and Alex Carey will still provide stability, while Marsh’s leadership will be crucial in challenging subcontinental conditions.
