As discussions around the future of Indian cricket’s senior stars continue to grow, former World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh has stepped in with a strong message for the decision-makers. Speaking on the Sports Tak podcast, Yuvraj emphasized the need for transparency regarding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The two stalwarts, despite stepping away from other formats, remain key figures in India’s ODI setup. Their recent performances have shown that they are still capable of delivering at the highest level. However, the lack of a clear roadmap from the management has raised questions about long-term planning.

Yuvraj acknowledged their continued importance, stating, “Senior players are important. Virat Kohli has had a superb series. Rohit has been performing consistently,” he said. But he also made it clear that performance alone should not delay important decisions about the future.

According to him, honest communication is essential – not just for the team’s benefit, but also for the players themselves.

“When Will You Groom Jaiswal?”: Yuvraj Singh

While Yuvraj supported the presence of experienced players, his biggest concern revolved around the lack of opportunities for emerging talents, particularly Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The young opener had impressed with a brilliant century in his previous ODI outing, yet found himself out of the playing XI in the following series. For Yuvraj, this raised serious questions about India’s approach to building a squad for the future.

“Look at Yashasvi Jaiswal; he scored a century in his last ODI, but he is sitting out. When will you groom Jaiswal? You have the World Cup next year,” Yuvraj questioned.

He stressed that grooming young players cannot be left until the last minute. If Jaiswal is seen as a long-term option, then he needs consistent opportunities now – not just occasional chances.

“If you are going to the World Cup, you should have played several games,” he added.

Yuvraj’s remarks reflect a broader concern in Indian cricket – finding the right balance between backing proven performers and preparing the next generation for major tournaments.

Yuvraj’s warning for Team India’s future

Beyond individual players, Yuvraj’s message was centered on long-term planning. He made it clear that his views were not about dropping senior players, but about ensuring the team is not caught unprepared.

“I am not saying you should drop someone. But if you’re playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, you need to start preparing your squad now. You need to give them many games. Take a decision, it shouldn’t happen at the last minute that one of your senior players gets injured and there’s no young player,” Yuvraj cautioned.

His warning highlights a practical concern – injuries, loss of form, or sudden transitions can disrupt even the strongest teams if there is no backup ready.

With both Rohit and Virat focusing on extending their ODI careers until 2027, the responsibility now lies with the selectors and team management to manage this transition carefully. It’s not just about maintaining current success, but also about ensuring continuity.

Yuvraj’s perspective comes from experience. Having been part of a World Cup-winning squad, he understands the importance of timing when it comes to building a team.
