In a sensational display of athleticism during Match 9 of WPL 2026, Gujarat Giants‘ debutant Shivani Singh left the DY Patil Stadium crowd in awe with a spectacular one-handed catch. Facing the high-flying Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on January 16, the young wicketkeeper-batter, playing as a specialist fielder today, proved why she was a key signing for the Giants this season. Her moment of brilliance came during a critical juncture in the powerplay, effectively dismantling RCB’s momentum just as they were looking to rebuild. The sheer reflexes and composure shown by the Himachal Pradesh star have already made her ‘blinder’ a top contender for the catch of the tournament.

The spectacular dismissal occurred in the fourth over of the RCB innings when young pacer set a tactical trap for the experienced Dayalan Hemalatha. Gautam delivered a sharp, rising bumper on middle stump that hurried Hemalatha, forcing her into an instinctive but awkward hook shot. The ball flew fine and low toward the short fine leg region, where Gujarat had placed the debutant Shivani in a very specific, aggressive position.

Reacting with lightning speed, Shivani lunged to her right, stretching her dominant hand out to pluck the ball out of thin air just inches above the turf. The ball stuck firmly in her palm as she tumbled onto the grass, completing a catch that appeared physically impossible to the naked eye. This wicket proved to be a turning point, as it left RCB reeling at 39/3 and silenced the Bengaluru supporters. Beyond the technical perfection of the catch, it was Shivani’s ‘presence of mind’ to hold onto the ball while absorbing the impact of the ground that truly stood out.

WPL 2026: Gujarat Giants’ powerplay blitz and RCB’s resilient recovery by Radha Yadav and Richa Ghosh

The first innings was a game of two halves, beginning with a fiery spell from the Giants’ pacers that left the Bengaluru dugout in shock. Renuka Singh Thakur set the tone by dismissing the in-form Smriti Mandhana with a trademark outswinger that clipped the off-stump, while Gautam doubled the pressure by removing Grace Harris and Hemalatha in quick succession. The dismissal of Hemalatha was the highlight of the session, featuring a stunning one-handed ‘blinder’ by debutant Shivani at short fine leg. Despite a rocky start that saw the Bengaluru side reduced to 45/4 within the powerplay, the first innings transformed into a gritty survival act followed by a counter-attacking recovery that tested the depth of Gujarat’s disciplined bowling attack.

However, RCB found their saviors in Radha Yadav and Richa Ghosh, who stitched together a vital 72-run partnership to rescue the innings from a total collapse. Radha played the anchor role with a composed 66 off 47, while Richa Ghosh provided the much-needed impetus, smashing 44 off 28 balls including four boundaries and two massive sixes over long-on. Despite Georgia Wareham breaking the stand and Sophie Devine chipping in with two late wickets, a whirlwind cameo of 26 off 12 by Nadine de Klerk ensured. Gujarat’s bowling remained sharp throughout, with Devine finishing as the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/31, setting the stage for a thrilling chase under the lights as the dew begins to settle on the Navi Mumbai turf.
