As the countdown begins for the T20 World Cup 2026, excitement is building around what promises to be another fast furious and unpredictable global tournament. Every edition of the shortest format has a habit of throwing up new heroes players who arrive without the weight of history and end up defining the narrative of the event. With conditions expected to favour aggressive batting and packed stadiums set to amplify the drama, the spotlight is once again turning towards the young guns who could set the tournament alight and keep fans on the edge of their seats.
Ravi Shastri names his player to watch out for in the T20 World Cup 2026
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has wasted no time in naming the player he believes could have the biggest impact at the mega event. Speaking at an ICC event in Mumbai, Shastri picked Abhishek Sharma as the one to watch, underlining the left hander’s confidence and destructive ability at the top of the order.
Shastri’s comments came shortly after Abhishek’s breathtaking display against New Zealand in Nagpur, where the young opener smashed 84 off just 35 balls. Batting alongside India skipper Suryakumar Yadav, Abhishek helped add 99 runs in only 47 deliveries, laying the foundation for India’s towering total of 238.
“Abhishek, without a shadow of a doubt. (He’s the) No. 1 T20 batsman in the world (and is) in a rich vein of form. Last evening (on Wednesday), he took the game away from New Zealand. You’ve got to watch out for him because his confidence level is high. He’ll be backed by the home crowd, and if he takes off, it means India takes off,” said Shastri.
High expectations from the explosive batter
Abhishek’s rise has been rapid and emphatic. He first grabbed attention with a sensational IPL 2024 campaign that showcased his fearless approach and clean striking. That momentum carried into international cricket, where he announced himself with a century against Zimbabwe at the start of his India career. Since then, he has become a regular feature in the T20 setup, often tasked with maximising the powerplay.
What sets Abhishek apart is not just his ability to clear the ropes but the intent he brings from ball one. His comfort against spin and willingness to take risks has allowed India to dominate bowling attacks early and post multiple totals in excess of 230. Shastri also pointed out that Abhishek’s presence at the top gives freedom to others in the lineup, easing pressure during patches of poor form. With India set to open their World Cup campaign on February 7 and home support expected to be overwhelming, expectations are naturally high.
