Italy have announced a 15-member squad for their maiden appearance at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Italy’s qualification itself has been hailed as a breakthrough for the nation’s growing cricket structure, and the addition of ex-South African batter in their squad brings invaluable international pedigree to a relatively young team facing elite opposition.

Group C challenge awaits Italy at T20 World Cup 2026

Italy have been drawn into a demanding Group C alongside Bangladesh, England, Nepal and West Indies. The group presents a stern test, featuring a mix of established powerhouses and an improving associate side in Nepal.

The Italians will begin their campaign against Bangladesh in Kolkata on February 9. They then travel to Mumbai to face Nepal on February 12, before returning to Kolkata for back-to-back fixtures against England on February 16 and West Indies on February 19. The compact schedule will challenge Italy’s depth, fitness and adaptability across conditions.

Wayne Madsen to captain Italy at T20 World Cup 2026

Experienced batter Wayne Madsen has been appointed captain for the multi-nation tournament. The leadership change follows a decisive move by selectors late last year, when former Australia international Joe Burns was removed as captain and subsequently omitted from the squad after leading Italy during the World Cup Qualifiers.

Madsen’s appointment signals a shift toward stability and experience, with team management placing trust in his ability to guide the side through unfamiliar, high-pressure environments. His calm approach and familiarity with associate cricket are expected to be crucial during Italy’s maiden World Cup campaign.

However, the inclusion of  JJ Smuts stands out as one of the most significant selections. The former South Africa international brings exposure from top-level T20 leagues and international cricket, offering Italy both tactical awareness and composure under pressure. His versatility as a top-order batter and useful bowler provides balance to a squad that will need flexibility against world-class opponents.

Smuts’ presence is also expected to aid younger players, particularly in reading conditions and managing momentum during crucial phases of matches.

Adding a distinctive element to Italy’s squad are two sets of brothers: Harry Manenti and Benjamin Manenti, along with Anthony Mosca and Justin Mosca. The family connections reflect the close-knit nature of Italian cricket and add an emotional dimension to the team’s historic journey.

Italy will, meanwhile, be without Emilio Gay, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury. His absence is a setback, given his recent form, but selectors remain confident that the squad has enough depth to cover the loss.
