Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy campaign came alive on Friday as Sarfaraz Khan produced a breathtaking double century against Hyderabad, sending fans into a frenzy and reaffirming his stature as one of domestic cricket’s most destructive batters. The right-hander combined power, precision, and unshakable confidence to script a knock that dominated the contest and captured the imagination of spectators across the country.

Sarfaraz Khan’s dazzling double hundred built on authority and intent

Sarfaraz reached his double century off just 206 balls, a rare blend of patience and aggression in red-ball cricket. It marked the fifth First-Class double century of his career, a remarkable milestone that underlines his consistency at the domestic level. Earlier in the innings, he brought up his 17th First-Class hundred—his first of the 2025–26 season—before shifting gears emphatically.

Since the 2019–20 season, only Amandeep Khare and Anustup Majumdar have registered more Ranji Trophy centuries than Sarfaraz, a statistic that highlights his sustained excellence. For Mumbai, the innings was a turning point—both in momentum and morale.

Dominance against quality bowling attack led by Mohammed Siraj

One of the defining passages of the innings was Sarfaraz’s fearless approach against India teammate Mohammed Siraj. Known for his intensity and pace, Siraj found himself under relentless pressure as Sarfaraz plundered 45 runs off just 39 deliveries, showcasing audacious strokeplay against high-quality fast bowling.

Sarfaraz was eventually dismissed for 227 off 219 balls, having struck 19 fours and nine sixes. His strike rate of 103.65 stood out in a format where such scoring tempo is rare, reflecting his modern, attacking mindset even in traditional conditions.

Sarfaraz’s red-hot form across formats

The double century is only the latest chapter in Sarfaraz’s sensational domestic season. Earlier in the campaign, he lit up the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26, smashing a blistering 15-ball half-century against Punjab—the fastest by an Indian in List A cricket. In the process, he eclipsed the long-standing joint record held by Abhijit Kale and Atit Sheth, both of whom had reached their fifties in 16 balls.

Sarfaraz finished that tournament as Mumbai’s highest run-scorer, amassing 303 runs in six innings at an average of 75.75 and a staggering strike rate of 190.56.

Although Sarfaraz last featured for India in a Test against New Zealand in November 2024, his bat has continued to speak loudly on the domestic circuit. He was Mumbai’s second-highest run-getter in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025–26, scoring 329 runs in seven matches at an average of 65.80 and a strike rate exceeding 200.

His form has not gone unnoticed. At the IPL 2026 auction, Sarfaraz was snapped up by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at his base price of Rs. 75 lakh, adding another dimension to their batting depth.
