Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from all formats of cricket, bringing the curtain down on a professional journey spanning nearly 14 years.
Veteran India seamer ends 14-year professional career
The 37-year-old made the announcement through an emotional Instagram post, writing:
“Today, with a full heart, I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket. From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing.”
Mohit’s career began in 2011, when he made his first-class debut for Haryana, marking the start of a rise that would soon see him don the India colours and enjoy success across domestic and franchise cricket.
Beyond the IPL and international cricket, Mohit leaves behind strong domestic numbers:
- 127 wickets in 44 first-class matches
- 86 wickets in 78 List A games
- 167 wickets in 172 T20 matches
Mohit Sharma’s cricketing career: From CSK breakthrough to India debut and World Cup success
Mohit burst onto the national radar after joining Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, where he made his T20 debut in 2013. His sharp new-ball swing and clever variations made him an instant asset. His performances earned him a place in India’s limited-overs setup, where he represented the country in 26 ODIs and 8 T20Is between 2013 and 2015, taking 37 wickets.
One of the standout moments of his international career came during the 2015 Cricket World Cup, where Mohit finished as India’s joint third-highest wicket-taker, showcasing his consistency on the global stage. In the IPL, he had already grabbed attention with a sensational 23-wicket season for CSK in 2014, winning the Purple Cap even before his India debut.
After a challenging phase with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Mohit reinvented himself as a death-overs specialist, eventually earning a remarkable late-career revival with Gujarat Titans in the 2023 IPL season. At age 35, he claimed 27 wickets, narrowly missing out on the Purple Cap and emerging as one of the standout performers of the tournament.
Mohit most recently played for Delhi Capitals during the IPL 2025 season, featuring in eight matches. However, after managing just two wickets at an economy of 10.28, he was released by the franchise as part of their off-season reshuffle.
Across 120 IPL matches, Mohit finished with an impressive 134 wickets, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s most impactful Indian seamers across eras.

He extended thanks to the BCCI, coaches, teammates, IPL franchises, support staff and friends who supported him throughout his career.
He saved his most personal tribute for his wife, saying: “Special thanks to my wife who always handled my mood swings and anger, and supported me through everything. I look forward to serving the game in fresh ways.”
