Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh recently shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes story about his protégé Abhishek Sharma, who continues to grab headlines for both his explosive batting and his quirky off-field habits. The left-handed opener, who recently shattered a world record by becoming the fastest player (in terms of balls faced) to reach 1,000 T20I runs, has now become the subject of a funny revelation by his mentor.
Abhishek achieved the remarkable milestone during the fifth T20I match against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. The 25-year-old reached the four-digit mark in just 528 balls – a record that cements his position among the most efficient run-scorers in the shortest format. He also emerged as the top run-getter of the series, amassing 163 runs in five matches, further strengthening India’s hold in the T20I landscape.
Yuvraj Singh reveals Abhishek Sharma’s secret
Yuvraj, who played a pivotal role in mentoring Abhishek during his early career in Chandigarh, couldn’t help but share a light-hearted anecdote that showcases the young star’s deep attachment to his cricket bats.
“You can take anything from Abhishek Sharma, but nobody can take his bat,” Yuvraj revealed with a chuckle during a recent interaction. He went on to describe how Abhishek guards his bats with an almost comical sense of possessiveness: “He will fight for it, even cry, but won’t give away his bat.”
According to Yuvraj, even though Abhishek owns multiple bats, he often pretends to have fewer, making excuses to keep them safe. “Even if he has 10 bats, he’ll still say, ‘I only have two.’ He’s taken all my bats, but never gives his own,” Yuvraj joked, drawing laughs from everyone present, including Abhishek himself. This amusing revelation highlights the bond between mentor and student — one built not just on cricketing guidance but also on personal trust, discipline, and humour.

Indian openers break record in Australia series
Aside from Yuvraj’s playful story, Abhishek’s recent on-field heroics have proven just how far the young opener has come. Teaming up with fellow Punjab batter Shubman Gill, the duo formed one of India’s most successful T20I opening combinations in recent history. Even though the fifth T20I in Brisbane was interrupted by rain after just 4.5 overs, the openers managed to delight fans with a quickfire partnership of 52 runs.
Across the series, Abhishek and Gill collectively scored 188 runs as partners — the highest-ever by any pair in a T20I series played in Australia against the hosts. Their stellar performance surpassed the previous record of 187 runs set by South Africa’s Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs earlier in 2025.
