The 12th encounter of the Sheffield Shield 2025-26 season between Queensland and Western Australia unfolded at the iconic W.A.C.A. Ground in Perth on Tuesday. The match attracted keen attention for its competitive edge and dramatic moments, setting the stage for a thrilling four-day first-class contest. Western Australia opted to field first, putting Queensland in to bat under bright conditions favourable for run-scoring and skilful cricket.

Cooper Connolly’s spectacular catch removes Michael Neser on Day 1

One of the standout moments of Day 1 was an electrifying catch by Western Australia’s fledgling talent, Cooper Connolly. In the 83.6th over, following a well-crafted bowl by Cameron Gannon, Michael Neser attempted to capitalize on a wide delivery by slashing at the ball towards deep point. The shot, intended to release pressure, ended up in the air with Connolly positioned perfectly. With great anticipation, Connolly executed an acrobatic, sliding catch just inside the boundary rope, denying Neser a chance to add to his 38 runs off 56 balls. This catch not only showcased Connolly’s athleticism and presence of mind but also gave Queensland’s bowlers an important breakthrough as Cameron Gannon claimed his fourth wicket in the innings. Neser’s dismissal at this crucial juncture interrupted Queensland’s steady progress and boosted the morale of the Western Australian side.

Queensland dominates Western Australia on a strong Day 1

Queensland’s first innings overall demonstrated dominance despite the spirited attempts by Western Australia’s bowlers. Batting first, Queensland managed to amass 323 runs for the loss of six wickets in 91 overs by stumps on Day 1. The run rate stood at a decent 3.54, reflecting a balance between caution and aggression.

Matt Renshaw was the linchpin of the Queensland innings with a determined century (101 runs off 198 balls including 8 fours and 2 sixes). He took command of the innings before falling to Gannon. Marnus Labuschagne, the Queensland captain, contributed a valuable 50 runs, supporting the strong foundation. Other notable contributors included Jack Clayton (32) and Michael Neser (38). Meanwhile, the lower order showed resilience with Lachlan Hearne unbeaten on 48 and Xavier Bartlett 27 not out, helping to stabilize the innings post-wickets.

The Western Australian bowling attack was led by Gannon who ended with an impressive figure of 4 for 54 in 18 overs. Other bowlers to make an impact were Aaron Hardie and Cameron Green, who consistently maintained pressure despite Queensland’s steady score accumulation. Queensland’s batsmen displayed a blend of patience and selective aggression, exploiting the conditions effectively and putting Western Australia on the back foot early in the match.
