The upcoming two-Test series between India and South Africa, scheduled from November 14 to 26, has already sparked excitement among cricket fans. With the first Test set to take place at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has shared his thoughts and predictions on the high-profile clash. Speaking on JioStar, Ganguly highlighted that while South Africa are the reigning World Test champions, India’s dominance at home will make the task extremely challenging for the visitors.

Ganguly, who led India to numerous memorable Test victories, emphasized the difficulty of beating India on their home soil. The former BCCI president expressed his excitement about the return of Test cricket to Eden Gardens, a venue deeply associated with his cricketing legacy.

“The first Test starts in Kolkata in a few days. It’s going to be a tough tour for South Africa. Playing against India in India is never easy. India is a very strong team in the subcontinent. They are a strong team abroad these days as well. I’m really looking forward to the Test at Eden Gardens. South Africa is a good team, so it should be a high-level match,” said Ganguly.

Focus shifts to World Test Championship implications

The 2025 series carries added significance as it forms part of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Ganguly pointed out that both teams will be eager to start strongly, particularly South Africa, who are defending champions after winning the 2023–25 cycle. He also mentioned South Africa’s recent performances as an indication of their resilience

“This series is important for the new World Test Championship cycle, especially as South Africa are the defending champions. Although they drew 1-1 with Pakistan, we are confident based on our good performance, creating a positive atmosphere, doing well in England and winning against the West Indies,” added Ganguly.

India’s home advantage and key battles to watch

With India boasting a formidable record at home, led by players like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jasprit Bumrah, the hosts are expected to start as favourites. However, South Africa’s pace attack featuring Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen could pose a stern test, especially on surfaces that assist both spin and pace.

Eden Gardens, known for its balance between bat and ball, promises an engaging battle between India’s batting depth and South Africa’s disciplined bowling. The series will also mark an opportunity for India to avenge their defeats in South Africa in past tours and strengthen their WTC standings early in the cycle.

As the cricketing world gears up for this marquee clash, Ganguly’s words set the tone perfectly — a contest between two world-class sides, driven by pride, legacy, and championship aspirations. With Kolkata ready to host the opener, fans can expect an electric atmosphere and high-quality Test cricket over the next fortnight.
