Emerging Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre created history in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 by smashing his maiden T20 century and becoming the youngest player to score hundreds across all three professional formats. The 18-year-old, also a rising Chennai Super Kings (CSK) prospect, delivered a breathtaking unbeaten 110 off 53 balls on Friday (November 27) at Lucknow’s Ekana Cricket Stadium, helping Mumbai chase down Vidarbha’s 193 with 13 balls to spare.
Ayush Mhatre surpasses Rohit Sharma’s record feat
At 18 years and 135 days, Mhatre eclipsed Rohit Sharma’s 19-year-old record of being the youngest to achieve the format triple. Rohit had accomplished the landmark at 19 years and 339 days, a milestone long considered untouchable in Indian domestic cricket. The new feat puts Mhatre in elite company, ahead of notable young achievers such as Unmukt Chand and Quinton de Kock.
The milestone T20 century completes a rare hat-trick for Mhatre, who already registered first-class and List A centuries earlier in his budding career. His blazing SMAT innings – featuring 8 fours and 8 sixes – saw him reach fifty in just 20 balls and bring up his century in 49 deliveries, stamping his authority as one of India’s most exciting young batters.
What made the achievement even more remarkable was the timing: the knock came just hours after he was named India’s captain for the ACC U19 Asia Cup 2025, amplifying the buzz around his rapid rise. The innings showcased his hallmark traits – clean hitting, fearless shot-making, and mature strike rotation – attributes that have drawn comparisons to Rohit Sharma himself.

Mumbai recover from early collapse to seal seven-wicket win over Vidarbha
Mumbai found themselves under pressure early in the chase at 21/2, losing captain Ajinkya Rahane for a duck and Hardik Tamore for 1. Mhatre stepped in to stabilize the innings, first stitching an 88-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav, who contributed a patient 35 off 30. The partnership allowed Mumbai to regain rhythm against disciplined Vidarbha bowling.
Once set, Mhatre shifted gears dramatically in the latter half, dominating the on-side boundary regions with effortless pick-up shots and clean lofts. His finishing partnership with Shivam Dube, who smashed an unbeaten 39 off 19 balls with three fours and three sixes, produced an 85-run blitz from just 35 balls, sealing Mumbai’s seven-wicket win and their second consecutive Elite Group A victory under Shardul Thakur.
Vidarbha’s earlier total of 192/7, driven by Atharva Taide’s 64 and Aman Mokhade’s 61, ultimately fell short against Mhatre’s brilliance.

CSK prospect strengthens case for senior-level breakthrough
Mhatre’s rise has been monitored closely by IPL franchises, particularly CSK, who retained him for the IPL 2026 season after a promising 2025 campaign where his previous best T20 score was 94. His latest domestic heroics further validate CSK’s long-term investment in him.
With leadership responsibilities in the upcoming U19 Asia Cup and growing synergy alongside fellow young star Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Mhatre is increasingly being seen as a future senior India contender. His blend of aggression, composure, and technical fluency continues to strengthen his reputation as one of India’s most complete batting talents in the next generation.
