Cricket Australia (CA) has announced a 15-member squad for the first Ashes Test against England, set to begin on November 21, 2025, at Perth Stadium.
Steve Smith takes charge as Pat Cummins ruled out of Perth Test
With regular skipper Pat Cummins sidelined due to a back injury, Steve Smith will captain the side, while Travis Head steps in as vice-captain.
Cummins’ absence comes as a blow for Australia, especially given his influence both as a captain and strike bowler. However, Cummins is expected to recover in time for the second Test in Brisbane.
On the other hand, Smith’s return to captaincy in an Ashes contest rekindles memories of his successful stints in the past. Under his leadership, Australia aims to continue its dominant home record, particularly at Perth Stadium, where they remain unbeaten in Test cricket.
Three uncapped players get the nod
The squad features a significant opportunity for Jake Weatherald, Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott, all of whom are yet to make their Test debut.
Weatherald, known for his attacking batting in domestic cricket, is a strong contender to open alongside Usman Khawaja, though Marnus Labuschagne is also being considered for the top order. His inclusion provides flexibility, especially with David Warner retired from Test cricket earlier in 2025.
Doggett and Abbott add variety and depth to the pace attack. Doggett, recognized for his accuracy and bounce, has been a consistent performer in the Sheffield Shield, while Abbott’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a valuable asset for the Australian setup.
Alongside the newcomers, the selectors have retained Australia’s core Test performers. Veterans Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood form the backbone of the squad. Alex Carey will continue as the primary wicketkeeper, with Josh Inglis serving as backup.
Both Sam Konstas and Matt Renshaw missed out on selection, with selectors citing the need to reward form and fitness shown in the early stages of the domestic season.
Cameron Green, Beau Webster bolster all-round options
A major boost for the team comes with the return of Cameron Green, who has successfully recovered from back surgery. The young all-rounder brings balance to the squad with his dual role and will be supported by Beau Webster, another versatile all-round option.
Selectors have emphasized maintaining a multi-dimensional squad, allowing flexibility in team composition based on pitch conditions and player fitness.
