Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) have unveiled their 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match home T20 International (T20I) series against Afghanistan, with the headline news being the sensational return of veteran leg-spinner and former captain, after a seven-year hiatus from international cricket. The series, which is a crucial part of both nations’ preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, is scheduled to commence on October 29, 2025, at the Harare Sports Club. Notably, both sides recently locked horns in a one-off Test where the hosts won by an innings and 73 runs.

Graeme Cremer makes a comeback after 7 years

The inclusion of Graeme Cremer is the talk of the cricketing world. At 39, the leg-spinner last donned the Zimbabwe colours in 2018. Following his retirement, Cremer had relocated to the UAE and even pursued golf. His recent decision to return home and compete in domestic cricket has paid dividends, with the selectors rewarding his form and experience.

Cremer’s return marks the only change to the squad that recently went unbeaten during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier, where Zimbabwe secured their berth for the 2026 tournament. He replaces pace bowler Trevor Gwandu in the 15-man roster. His wealth of experience, including 29 T20I appearances, will be invaluable to the squad, especially as they look to build a strong spin-bowling unit.

Sikandar Raza to lead a familiar side

The side will continue to be led by veteran all-rounder Sikandar Raza. The selectors have largely opted for continuity, showing faith in the core group of players who performed admirably in the qualifiers. The squad is a blend of seasoned campaigners and promising young talent.

Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Brendan Taylor also retains his spot as he continues his return to the international setup. The pace attack will be spearheaded by the experienced duo of Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani.

The squad sees the retention of several impressive young performers from the recent qualifiers, including batters Brian Bennett and Dion Myers, wicketkeeper Clive Madande, and all-rounders Brad Evans and Tashinga Musekiwa. Their continued inclusion underscores the selectors’ commitment to nurturing the next generation of Zimbabwean cricketers alongside the experience of players like Raza and Cremer. A notable absentee remains senior all-rounder Sean Williams, who is still unavailable as he attends to personal matters.
