Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, known for his perfectionist approach to cinema, recently shared a hilarious personal anecdote from the early days of his life. In an interview that took many by surprise, Aamir, speaking on The Lallantop, opened up about how his wedding to Reena Dutta on April 18, 1986, was inadvertently overshadowed by a historic moment in cricket. In that game, Javed Miandad’s iconic last-ball six against India in the final of the Austral-Asia Cup Sharjah, a strike that is etched in the collective memory of millions of cricket fans in the subcontinent.
The big day that turned into a cricketing tragedy for India
Recalling the fateful day, Aamir revealed that he and Reena had eloped to get married. The two were young and deeply in love, and decided to tie the knot despite not having the full consent of their families at the time. Their wedding was supposed to be a secret, at least for a while and they expected a tense reaction upon returning home. However, to their utter surprise, their families were too busy watching the gripping India vs Pakistan final to even notice their absence. “I thought we were going to get scolded for being away for so long, but everyone was fixated on the match,” Aamir said, laughing.
The match was tense and emotional, a perfect reflection of India-Pakistan cricket rivalry. India had posted a competitive score of 245, and Pakistan required 246 to win. With just four runs needed off the final ball, Miandad faced Indian pacer Chetan Sharma, and in what would become one of the most painful memories for Indian cricket fans, he launched the ball into the stands for a six. It wasn’t just a cricketing loss for India; for Aamir, it also marked the end of what should have been a perfect wedding day.

Aamir candidly shared that he was overjoyed not just because he had gotten married but also because India were poised to win a thrilling match against its fiercest rivals. “It felt like the stars had aligned, my wedding, India winning, a day full of joy,” he reminisced. But the joy was short-lived. As the ball sailed over the ropes off Miandad’s bat, the entire mood shifted, both in the living room and in Aamir’s heart. “It was like the happiness got sucked out of the room,” he added. That six remains one of the most iconic and controversial moments in India-Pakistan cricket history.
What was supposed to be the happiest day of Aamir’s life quickly turned bittersweet. Years later, Aamir got a surprising opportunity to confront the man responsible for his heartbreak, Miandad himself. During a flight, Aamir found himself seated next to the Pakistani cricket legend. Seizing the moment, he jokingly brought up the infamous six. “Javed bhai, aapne meri shaadi barbaad kar di,” Aamir told him with a chuckle. Miandad, confused, asked how that was possible. Aamir then explained, “You hit that six on my wedding day. I was so depressed, it overshadowed everything else,”
