14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, blazed his way into the record books on Wednesday, delivering an extraordinary performance that propelled India to a four-wicket victory and a 2-1 series lead in the third Youth ODI against England. The left-handed opener’s whirlwind 86 runs off just 31 balls at Northampton not only secured a crucial win but also rewrote several Indian U-19 and Youth ODI records.

The Suryavanshi storm: 9 sixes and a record-breaking knock

Chasing England’s 269 in a rain-affected 40-over contest, Suryavanshi unleashed an immediate assault. He reached his half-century in a mere 14 deliveries, marking the third-fastest fifty in India U-19 history and the second-quickest by an Indian in Youth ODIs, narrowly missing Rishabh Pant’s 18-ball record. His explosive innings included six fours and a remarkable nine sixes, surpassing Mandeep Singh’s previous Indian U-19 record of eight maximums in a single ODI.

Suryavanshi’s aggression was relentless, with five of his nine sixes coming in a blistering ten-ball sequence that left the English bowlers reeling and spectators in awe.

His astonishing strike rate of 277.41 was not just impressive; it was historic. He became the first player in Youth ODI history to score over 80 runs at a strike rate exceeding 250, eclipsing Suresh Raina’s long-standing world record for the fastest 80-plus score in U-19 ODIs, set in 2004.

Suryavanshi’s impact in India’s resilient chase

Despite Suryavanshi’s early heroics, which ended in the eighth over when he attempted to pull a short ball to fine leg, India’s chase faced a mid-innings wobble, slumping to 199 for 6 in the 24th over. However, the lower order showed resilience. All-rounder Kanishk Chouhan, who had earlier taken three wickets, anchored the innings with an unbeaten 43 off 42 balls. He, alongside RS Ambrish (31 not out), forged a vital 75-run partnership, guiding India to victory with 33 balls to spare.

Suryavanshi’s sensational form has been a highlight of the series. Following scores of 48 (19 balls) and 45 (34 balls) in the first two matches, his latest record-breaking knock establishes him as India’s leading run-scorer and the second overall in the series, with 179 runs at an astounding strike rate. His consistent and fearless approach has drawn comparisons to Indian senior team stars Rishabh Pant and Suresh Raina, both of whom rose through the U-19 ranks.

This outstanding performance follows Suryavanshi’s recent IPL success, where he scored a century for Rajasthan Royals (RR), further showcasing his exceptional talent. In the absence of regular captain Ayush Mhatre, Suryavanshi’s leadership and aggressive batting at the top of the order have been crucial in India’s strong comeback after a narrow one-wicket loss in the previous match.

With two matches remaining in the series, India now holds the momentum. Suryavanshi’s historic innings has not only provided his team with a significant advantage but has also announced the arrival of a burgeoning new star in Indian cricket.
