The Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy was abuzz with anticipation as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh locked horns in the series-deciding third ODI on July 8, 2025. With the series balanced at 1-1, both teams had everything to play for. Sri Lanka, led by Charith Asalanka, opted to bat first after winning the toss, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest that would ultimately see the hosts clinch a memorable 99-run victory and the series crown.

Kusal Mendis orchestrates a masterclass with a tremendous ton

Kusal Mendis delivered a knock for the ages, lighting up Kandy with a sublime 124 off 114 balls. Coming in early after the loss of Nishan Madushka, Mendis steadied the ship alongside Pathum Nissanka (35), building a crucial partnership that took Sri Lanka past 50 in the ninth over. Displaying a blend of composure and controlled aggression, Mendis reached his half-century in 58 balls, peppering the boundary with crisp drives and elegant cuts.

As wickets fell around him, Mendis anchored the innings, accelerating after the 30th over. His partnership with skipper Asalanka (58) was the backbone of the Sri Lankan total, adding 124 runs for the fourth wicket. Mendis brought up his century in just 95 balls, a testament to his dominance and timing. His innings, studded with 18 boundaries, ended at 124 when he was caught and bowled by Shamim Hossain, but not before propelling Sri Lanka to an imposing 285/7 in their 50 overs.

Sri Lanka outclass Bangladesh to seal a series victory in the decider

Chasing 286, Bangladesh needed a strong start but were rocked early by the Sri Lankan pace attack. Asitha Fernando and Dushmantha Chameera struck in quick succession, reducing Bangladesh to 20/2 inside four overs. Despite a fighting 51 from Towhid Hridoy and a brisk 28 from captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the visitors struggled to build momentum as wickets tumbled at regular intervals.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Asitha and Chameera both picked up three wickets apiece, while Dunith Wellalage and Wanindu Hasaranga chipped in with two each. Bangladesh’s chase unraveled quickly after the 30th over, and they were eventually bowled out for 186 in 39.4 overs, handing Sri Lanka a comprehensive 99-run win and the series 2-1.
