The Day 4 of the fourth Test between England and India witnessed intense cricketing action. After a poor start, India showed remarkable determination in the last two sessions, keeping their hopes of a draw alive in this crucial encounter. Now, as the game heads into the final day, all eyes will be on whether India can hold their nerve and deny England a series-clinching win.
KL Rahul and Shubman Gill frustrate England bowlers on Day 4
India had a horrible start to their second innings when two of their batters — Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan — chipped out without a single run on the board, as Chris Woakes struck twice in the same over. But what came next was absolute brilliance with the bat. Rahul and Gill showed excellent temperament in their defence. The duo ensured they didn’t give away any more wickets to the opposition and kept hitting boundaries at regular intervals.
Both have stitched a massive partnership of 174 runs, with Rahul batting on unbeaten 87 and Gill on 78. With three sessions of the game still left, England still seem favourites from here, but India have surely kept the hopes of a draw alive. With Rishabh Pant doubtful to bat, England will need some good deliveries up front.
Ben Stokes’ masterclass innings powers England past 300 run lead at Old Trafford
England began Day 4 in dominant fashion. Resuming with a formidable 186-run lead, they piled on runs quickly to tighten their grip on the match. Captain Ben Stokes marked his return to century form in Tests with a brilliant 141, his first hundred in over two years. Brydon Carse added valuable lower-order runs, scoring a brisk 47 off 54 balls, helping England finish at 669 and extend their lead to a mammoth 311 and pushing the game firmly out of India’s reach.
India’s bowling effort was largely underwhelming. Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled 33 overs for 112 runs with just two wickets and reduced pace due to an ankle issue. While Ravindra Jadeja took 4 wickets and Washington Sundar took 2, overall, India found it tough to contain England’s batting, allowing them to build a strong innings against persistent pressure and maintain control throughout.
