India got off to a commanding start on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley, thanks to a composed and dazzling century from opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. The 22-year-old southpaw continued his love affair with milestone moments, reaching three figures in what is his debut Test knock on English soil.
After being put in to bat under cloudy skies, India’s openers KL Rahul and Jaiswal weathered the early movement to stitch together a solid 91-run partnership. England struck back just before lunch, removing both openers in quick succession to halt India’s momentum. But Jaiswal, undeterred by the pressure, carried on with his signature flair and focus.
Century with a roar and a leap for Yashasvi Jaiswal
Jaiswal reached his century in style on the final ball of the 49th over, nudging a Brydon Carse delivery through point for a single. As he completed the run, he raised his arm, took off his helmet, and let out a triumphant roar, leaping in celebration — a moment filled with emotion and satisfaction. The celebration spoke volumes about his hunger and determination.
His innings was a mix of patience and aggression, built over 144 balls with 16 crisply struck boundaries and one towering six. He found an able partner in skipper Gill, who complemented him with a composed half-century as the duo put on a century-plus stand for the third wicket.
Jaiswal enters India’s elite list
With his unbeaten ton at Headingley, Jaiswal joined an illustrious group of Indian batters who have scored centuries in their maiden Test innings in England. His knock now stands alongside greats like Sourav Ganguly, Vijay Manjrekar, and Murali Vijay.

Jaiswal’s knock came to an end early in the third session when England captain Ben Stokes finally broke through. The young batter walked off for a well-crafted 101 off 159 balls — an innings that set the tone for India’s day and possibly the series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal – what a fine ton. Hope he scores a daddy hundred. First LHB opener to hit a century in England. Hit 700+ runs in the home series v England last year. Could well get a lot of runs in this series as well

Fantastic century by ybj_19 👏👏! Partnership withGill has taken India out of mini crisis into strong position. England’s decision to bowl first has boomeranged. India’s batting has been assured and classy. ‘RoKo’s’absence bsrely felt
