Shubman Gill loses cool, argues with the umpire following his controversial run-out against SRH (PC: X)

A commanding batting performance by Gujarat Titans (GT) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday was marred by a contentious third umpire decision that saw skipper Shubman Gill controversially run out, sparking a heated exchange with match officials.

Shubman Gill argues with umpire after controversial run-out

Gill, who was in exceptional form, was anchoring the Titans’ innings with a blistering 76 off just 38 deliveries when the incident occurred on the final ball of the 13th over. With GT having been invited to bat first and off to a flying start, the stage was set for a massive total, but Gill’s dismissal injected an unexpected dose of drama into the contest.

The pivotal moment unfolded when SRH spinner Zeeshan Ansari bowled the last delivery of the 13th over. Jos Buttler, at the striker’s end, played the ball towards the leg side and immediately called for a quick single. Harshal Patel, fielding inside the 30-yard circle, was swift to react, pouncing on the ball and unleashing a sharp throw towards the striker’s end. Wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen gathered the throw and attempted to complete the run-out as Gill scrambled to make his ground.

The on-field umpires, uncertain about the timing of the bails being dislodged, referred the decision to the third umpire, Michael Gough. What followed was a period of intense scrutiny as multiple replays from various angles were examined. The replays appeared to suggest a degree of ambiguity, with the ball seemingly not firmly in Klaasen’s gloves when the bails were disturbed. There were suggestions that contact with the gloves might have occurred marginally before or simultaneously with the dislodging of the stumps, raising the possibility of glove interference.

Despite the inconclusive nature of the footage, the third umpire ultimately ruled Shubman Gill out. The decision immediately ignited a firestorm of debate among commentators in the प्रसारण box and the thousands of fans in the stands.

Visibly disappointed and frustrated by the call, Gill began the long walk back to the pavilion. However, his composure broke upon reaching the boundary rope. He made a direct approach towards the on-field umpires, engaging in a fervent discussion as he questioned the decision and sought an explanation for the ruling.

The heated interaction was captured by television cameras, showing Gill expressing his strong disapproval to the fourth umpire, gesticulating animatedly as he conveyed his displeasure. This emotional outburst from the usually calm GT captain has now brought his conduct under the scanner and could potentially lead to disciplinary action under the BCCI’s Code of Conduct, which governs player behaviour during matches.

Gujarat Titans finish their innings at 224/6

Prior to his controversial departure, Gill’s explosive innings had already provided a formidable platform for the Gujarat Titans. His 76-run contribution was a cornerstone of their innings, built upon an aggressive opening stand with Sai Sudharsan, who scored a rapid 48 off 23 balls. Buttler further bolstered the scoring with a brisk 64 off 37 deliveries. Their combined efforts ensured that despite the late hiccup, the Titans posted a challenging total of 224 for 6 at the end of their allotted 20 overs, setting a demanding target for SRH.
