After a dominant opening stand for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings finally found the breakthrough they desperately needed, and it came through a moment of fielding brilliance. Dewald Brevis pulled off a sensational diving catch to dismiss Jacob Bethell, who was in full flow during his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) fifty. Matheesha Pathirana, introduced into the attack, struck gold on his very first delivery of the match.

Bowling a clever off-pace short ball just outside off, Pathirana tempted Bethell into an aggressive swipe across the line. The RCB opener, looking to extend his explosive innings, mistimed it high into the night sky. Positioned at deep mid-wicket, Brevis sprinted in from the boundary, never taking his eyes off the ball, and dove full stretch to complete a catch just inches above the turf. The stadium erupted as Brevis claimed his second stunning catch in as many matches, a reminder of his growing impact in the field. Bethell, who smashed 55 off just 33 balls with eight boundaries and two sixes at a strike rate of 166.66, walked back to rousing applause, but his dismissal brought much-needed relief to a struggling CSK. The breakthrough came with RCB at 97/1 in the 10th over, shifting the momentum just when the hosts looked set for a mammoth total.

RCB dominate with bat as Romario Shepherd unleashes late assault against CSK

After being asked to bat first by CSK, RCB put on a commanding display at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, racking up a daunting 213/5 in their 20 overs. The foundation was laid by an explosive opening stand between Bethell (55 off 33) and Virat Kohli (62 off 33), who stitched together 97 runs inside the first 10 overs with calculated aggression and crisp strokeplay.

Pathirana provided CSK some hope with a three-wicket haul, including Bethell and skipper Rajat Patidar, but the real game-changer arrived in the death overs when Romario Shepherd tore into the bowling attack. Blasting an unbeaten 53 off just 14 deliveries, including 4 fours and 6 sixes, Shepherd propelled RCB past 200, adding 50 runs for the sixth wicket with Tim David in just 14 balls. Khaleel Ahmed endured a nightmare spell, conceding 65 from his three overs, as RCB closed out their innings with a stunning run rate of 10.65. CSK now face a steep chase of 214, with the asking rate already soaring at nearly 11 an over.
