Harbhajan Singh slams CSK management over Ravichandran Ashwin’s benching amidst dismal IPL 2025 campaign

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp is facing intense scrutiny following a disappointing run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The five-time champions have endured a torrid time, securing just two victories from their ten outings, a performance that has already sealed their early exit from the playoff race. This premature departure has sparked considerable debate among fans and experts alike, with veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin becoming a central figure in the discussions, particularly concerning his utilisation – or lack thereof – by the team management.

CSK made a significant investment in the experienced spinner at the mega auction last November, securing his services for a hefty Rs 9.75 crore. However, Ashwin’s season has been a mixed bag. He has featured in only seven matches so far, managing to pick up just five wickets. More recently, his absence from the playing eleven has raised eyebrows, especially in crucial fixtures.

Adding fuel to the fire, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has launched a scathing criticism of the CSK management’s strategy, particularly highlighting the decision to bench Ashwin. Speaking on a sports broadcast, Singh did not mince words when discussing the team’s approach, especially concerning their match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at their home ground, Chepauk, on Wednesday, April 30.

“Chennai didn’t select the team based on conditions,” Harbhajan stated, suggesting a fundamental flaw in the team’s planning. He argued that a different bowling combination could have potentially altered the outcome of the Punjab Kings game. “Had Noor Ahmad, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja played together against Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings could have won the match,” he opined, emphasising the potential impact of having three quality spinners operating in tandem on a surface traditionally known to assist turn.

Ashwin might have fought with someone reckons Harbhajan

Bhajji directly questioned the rationale behind keeping a player of Ashwin’s calibre, and price tag, out of the side. “You didn’t pay Rs 10 crore for Ashwin to bench him,” he remarked pointedly. His frustration was palpable as he delved into possible reasons for Ashwin’s sidelining, even speculating on potential internal issues. “I don’t know why he is not playing, but it seems he might have fought with someone,” Harbhajan added, though this remains unverified speculation.

Furthermore, Harbhajan drew a stark comparison between Ashwin and other members of the squad who, despite not hitting peak form, continue to retain their spots in the playing XI. “He is not the only one who hasn’t performed. Others are still playing despite their ordinary performances, but Ashwin is out of the team,” Singh highlighted, underscoring what he perceives as an inconsistent selection policy. He reiterated that the Punjab Kings fixture, specifically, demanded Ashwin’s presence due to the pitch conditions. “He should have played against Punjab, as the ball was spinning,” he asserted.

As CSK navigate the final stages of what has been a forgettable campaign, they are set to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their next encounter. This crucial match will be played at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, May 3.
