Gujarat Titans (GT) successfully defended a formidable total of 224/6 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday, clinching a crucial victory in Match 51 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The home side’s commanding batting display, spearheaded by scintillating knocks from Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, set up the win, though the match was not without its talking points, most notably the controversial run-out dismissal of the GT skipper.
A comprehensive win for Gujarat Titans against Sunrisers Hyderabad
Having won the toss, SRH captain Pat Cummins opted to bowl first, a decision that initially seemed questionable as GT openers came out all guns blazing. Sai Sudharsan continued his impressive form, providing a rapid start with a quickfire 48 off just 23 balls, laced with nine boundaries. However, the true acceleration came from captain Shubman Gill, who looked in sublime touch. Gill played a magnificent innings, scoring a dominant 76 off only 38 deliveries, including ten fours and two sixes, anchoring the middle overs and putting SRH bowlers under immense pressure.
Gill’s innings, however, ended in controversy in the 13th over when he was adjudged run out by the third umpire in a tight call that sparked significant debate and visible frustration from the GT captain. Despite this setback, Jos Buttler ensured the momentum didn’t wane, contributing a vital 64 runs from 37 balls, featuring three fours and four towering sixes. Late cameos from Washington Sundar (21 off 16), Shahrukh Khan (6 off 2), and Rahul Tewatia (6 off 3) propelled GT to a daunting total of 224/6 in their 20 overs.
For SRH, Jaydev Unadkat was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets for 35 runs in his four overs. Captain Pat Cummins managed one wicket for 40 runs, while Zeeshan Ansari also chipped in with a wicket, conceding 42 runs. Mohammad Shami and Harshal Patel had expensive outings without picking up a wicket.
Chasing a massive target of 225, SRH needed a blistering start, but they lost Travis Head early for 20. Abhishek Sharma, however, kept their hopes alive with a power-packed innings of 74 off 41 balls, including four fours and six maximums. Despite his efforts, wickets fell at regular intervals around him. Ishan Kishan struggled to get going, scoring 13 off 17, while Heinrich Klaasen contributed a brief 23 off 18. Aniket Verma and Kamindu Mendis failed to make significant contributions. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Cummins attempted to provide some late fireworks with quick scores of 21 and 19 respectively, but the required run rate proved too high.
GT bowlers put in a disciplined performance to defend their total. Mohammed Siraj was effective, picking up two crucial wickets for 33 runs in his four overs. Prasidh Krishna was particularly impressive, also claiming two wickets while being economical, giving away only 19 runs from his four overs. Ishant Sharma took one wicket for 35 runs, and Gerald Coetzee secured a wicket for 36 runs. Despite Rashid Khan having an off day with the ball, the collective effort ensured SRH fell short, finishing their innings at 186/6.
