In a high-octane contest at the iconic Eden Gardens, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) held their nerve to script a remarkable two-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 57 of the Indian Premier League 2025. Chasing 180 for victory, CSK overcame a top-order collapse thanks to some explosive middle-order batting, sealing the win with two balls to spare.

Kolkata Knight Riders build a competitive total

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Knight Riders posted a solid total of 179/6 in their 20 overs. Despite an early jolt with the dismissal of Angkrish Raghuvanshi for just 1 run, the Knight Riders found stability through a well-paced knock from Ajinkya Rahane. The seasoned campaigner struck 48 off 33 balls, anchoring the innings while building partnerships with Sunil Narine (26 off 17) and Manish Pandey (36 off 28).

Andre Russell then provided the late fireworks with a blistering 38 off just 21 deliveries, smashing four boundaries and three towering sixes to push KKR closer to the 180-mark. Rinku Singh chipped in with a quick 9, but CSK’s Noor Ahmad stood out with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for 31 runs in a match-defining spell. Ravindra Jadeja and Anshul Kamboj contributed with a wicket apiece, as CSK managed to keep the hosts under 180 on a batting-friendly surface.

Dewald Brevis and MS Dhoni shine in CSK’s chase

CSK’s chase got off to a nightmare start, losing both openers — Ayush Mhatre and Devon Conway — for ducks within the opening overs. The early pressure was momentarily lifted by a fiery cameo from Urvil Patel, who hammered 31 off just 11 balls, including four sixes. However, with wickets continuing to fall at regular intervals, KKR seemed to have the upper hand.

That was until Dewald Brevis turned the tide with a game-changing knock of 52 off 25 balls, blending brute force with clever strokeplay. Supported ably by Shivam Dube, who played a composed 45 off 40, the duo stitched a vital partnership that brought CSK back into the contest. Veteran skipper MS Dhoni chipped in with a crucial six during his 17-run knock before Kamboj applied the finishing touch with a boundary off his only ball faced.

For KKR, Varun Chakaravarthy was outstanding with the ball, returning figures of 2/18 in four overs, while Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana shared five wickets between them. Moeen Ali also made an impact with the ball, dismissing the dangerous Urvil.
