In a significant mid-season acquisition aimed at revitalizing their struggling IPL 2025 campaign, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have secured the services of South African batting prodigy Dewald Brevis.
CSK ropes in Dewald Brevis for the remainder of IPL 2025
The 21-year-old Brevis joins the five-time champions as a replacement for injured Indian pacer Gurjapneet Singh. This strategic move comes at a crucial juncture for CSK, who currently find themselves at the bottom of the league standings with only two victories in their seven matches.
The young South African right-handed batter boasts an impressive record in the T20 arena, having accumulated 1,787 runs in 81 matches across various prominent global franchise leagues. These include prior stints in the IPL, Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Major League Cricket (MLC) and his impactful performances in SA20. Brevis also made his debut for the South African T20 International side in 2023, featuring in two matches so far. While his previous IPL experience with Mumbai Indians (MI) saw him play 10 matches between 2022 and 2024 with a modest average of 23 and a strike rate of 133, his recent form in the SA20 has been electrifying. He was the sixth-highest run-scorer in the tournament, amassing 291 runs at a blistering strike rate of 184.17, signalling his immense potential.

CSK shells out big bucks for Baby AB
CSK have reportedly paid a substantial INR 2.2 crore to bring Dewald Brevis, nicknamed as ‘Baby AB,’ into their fold. This figure represents a significant jump from his base price of INR 75 lakh at the IPL 2025 mega auction, where he surprisingly went unsold.

The hefty investment underscores CSK’s pressing need to inject firepower into their batting lineup, particularly with key players like Ruturaj Gaikwad having faced injury concerns earlier in the season. Brevis is renowned for his aggressive and fearless batting approach, and the franchise will be hoping he can provide the much-needed impetus to their middle-order, which has lacked consistent big scores.
