Although England’s journey in the Champions Trophy 2025 has already come to an end, the last remaining hope for the English batters succumbed when Jamie Overton’s innings came to an end by a sensational running catch from Lungi Ngidi.
Lungi Ngidi stuns Jamie Overton at mid-on
The incident occurred in the 26th over of England’s innings when Ngidi was at fielding duties for South Africa at mid-on. An incoming good-length ball from Kagiso Rabada was smashed high in the air by Overton with the hope of crossing the boundary line. However, the ball did not get the trajectory ಌit needed nor did it come from the middle of the bat.
The ball sailed past mid-on where Ngidi ran towards it in an emphatic manner and managed to take the catch and mark the end o🐲f Overton’s innings. The English all-rounder scored just 11 runs off 20 balls and was the last lower-order batter for England before the arrival of the tailen൲ders on the other end.

English horror-show with the bat
England’s decision to bat first has backfired as they limped to a modest total of just 179 in 38.2 overs, failing to break the 200-run mark. Despite the best efforts of Joe Root, who top-scored with 37, the batting collapse was swift and relentless, with wickets tumbling in clusters. No other batter managed to make a significant contribution, leaving England in a dire position. South Africa’s bowlers maintained their composure and seized every opportunity in the field, delivering a disciplined performance. With such a low total on the board, England now face an uphill battle as South Africa look poised to chase down the target and secure the top spot in Group B.
For South Africa it was a solid performance with the bowl with Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder clinching 3 wickets each and significant contribution from Keshav Maharaj w🥀ho took 2 wickets for the Proteas. Thus a majestic display of this sort goes on to show that South Africa are prepared for any given challenge in the semi-final of the tournament.
