‘A true modern great of the game…’: Yuvraj Singh, Ishant Sharma lead retirement wishes for Steve Smith

Former Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Ishant Sharma were among those who extended heartfelt wishes to Australian batter Steve Smith following his retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Smith announced his decision after Australia’s semi-final loss to India in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Retirement messages for Steve Smith

Yuvraj, a World Cup-winning all-rounder, took to social media to express his admiration for Smith’s career. Recalling their time together at Pune Warriors India in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Yuvraj praised Smith’s growth into one of the game’s greats. He noted Smith’s dedication and perseverance, which led him to become a two-time World Cup winner.

“Steve Smith, a true modern great of the game. Your dedication and brilliance will be remembered for years to come. Wishing you all the best in this next chapter of your journey,” former India p🌞acer Ishant Sharma captioned his post.

“Well done Smudge. The achievements are obvious. But the memories will last a lifetime. Congrats on a terrific ODI career,” wrote Smith’s Test teammate Usman Khawaja.

David Warner took to Instagram to express his admiration for Smith’s career. Sharing personal photos and memories of his close friend, Warner wrote: “Congrats mate on an unbelievable one-day career. Blues to Australia, loved being alongside you. You’ve served the country unbelievably well, and hopefully, this decision prolongs you to keep going in the Test arena. Best player I’ve played alongside in my career. #Goat #legend #cricket.”

Reflecting on their time together, former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson said: “You and your family should be unbelievably proud of all that you achieved. I feel very fortunate to have had so many special memories on the field together. Your 65 against Pakistan in the 2015 WC Quarter-final and your 105 in the semi-final against India were two standout innings of your ODI career. Special times, mate!! Congrats again on all you achieved, Smudge.”
