In the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan’s spinner Abrar Ahmed found himself at the center of controversy after dismissing Indian opener Shubman Gill. Despite bowling a stunning delivery that caught Gill off guard, Ahmed’s animated send-off drew sharp criticism from none other than Pakistani cricket legend Wasim Akram.
The controversial incident
During India’s chase of Pakistan’s 241 runs, Abrar bowled a beautiful carrom ball that ripped past Gill’s outside edge, knocking over his stumps. The dismissal came in the 18th over, reducing India to 100/2. However, it was Ahmed’s reaction that sparked debate. He folded his hands and signalled with his eyes, indicating that Gill should leave the field, a gesture that many perceived as aggressive.

Wasim Akram’s criticism
Wasim Akram, known for his candid opinions, expressed his disapproval of Ahmed’s celebration. Speaking on Sports Central, Akram praised the delivery but criticized the send-off, stating, “Time aur jagah hoti hain na yaar” (There is a time and place for everything). Akram empha🌊sized that such celebrations are justified only when a team is winning or when a player has produced a match-win✃ning performance, not when the team is struggling.
Akram noted that Ahmed’s behaviour did not look good on TV and advised him to be humble, especially in a situation where Pakistan were under pressure. He questioned whether anyone was guiding Ahmed on how to conduct himself in such situations.
“Is there no one to pull him up and ask what he was doing? Look at the match situation—you are under the cosh, yet you are celebrating as if you have taken five wickets,” he added.
“The celebration killed everything,” Akram said.
