Pakistan are yet to announce their squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with Saim Ayub’s ankle injury cited as a key reason for the delay. The 22-year-old rising star, who sustained the injury while fielding during the second Test against South Africa in Cape Ayub’s absence is particularly disappointing given his exceptional ODI record. The Champions Trophy, set to take place from February 1𒊎9 to March 9 across venues in Pakistan and Dubai, is a high-stakes event, and Pakistan’s squad selection will be under intense scrutiny.

Mohsin Naqvi provides update on Ayub’s availability for the Champions Trophy 2025

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has emphasized safeguarding Saim Ayub’s long-term career, opting to focus on his recovery rather than rushing him back for the Champions Trophy. Addressing the media, Naqvi shared that medical experts in London have determined surgery is unnecessary, recommending a carefully planned rehabilitation program to ensure Ayub regains full fitness.

“I am closely monitoring Saim’s condition. He is currently undergoing rehab. His leg cast will come off in 1-2 days. After that, he will enter the recovery phase, which will take time. I don’t want to put his future at risk because of one Champions Trophy. Saim Ayub is a valuable asset for us, and, God willing, he will recover soon,” Naqvi said.

Saim Ayub’s remarkable form in the ODI’s for Pakistan

Ayub has quickly emerged as one of Pakistan’s brightest cricketing talents. With three centuries across tours in Australia and South Africa, his contributions have been pivotal to P💖akistan’s recent successes. His back-to-back hundreds against South Africa in their ODI series victory last m🍒onth cemented his reputation as a top-order powerhouse. The timing of Ayub’s injury is particularly unfortunate, as he was expected to play a significant role in the Champions Trophy.

While his absence would be a blow, it highlights the importance of developing a squad with depth to handle such setbacks. Averaging 64.37 in nine matches, Ayub has been in sublime form, recently scoring two centuries in Pakistan’s 3-0 whitewash over South Africa. His inclusion in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024 further underscores his value to the team.
