On Sunday (August 4), the Northern Superchargers secured the 14-run victory against the Manchester Originals in The Hundred Men’s 2024 at Headingley. The Originals decided to bowl first after winning the toss. The decision appeared promising as Fazalhaq Farooqi൲ struck for them with th🍒e very first ball of the match.

Northern Superchargers’ innings

Despite the early setback, the Superchargers gradually rebuilt their innings. Graham Clark and captain Harry Brook led the recovery with a well-paced 50-run partnership. Brook, showcasing his explosive batting style, scored a scintillating 58 off just 33 balls, anchoring the innings before being caught by Scott Currie at mid-off. The middle order provided solid contributions, but the Originals’ bowlers managed to fight back towards the end, restricting the Superchargers to a total of 167/5.

Manchester Originals’ response

In response, the Originals got off to a flying start, thanks to their captain Phil Salt and Matthew Hurst. The duo forged a commanding 90-run opening partnership, setting a solid foundation for the chase. Salt played a brisk innings, scoring 40 from 27 balls, while Hurst top-scored with an impressive 78 off 45 balls. Their aggressive batting initially 🦩put the Originals in a strong position to overhaul the target.

Turning point and Matty Hurst’s run-out

However, the momentum shifted dramatically after the strong opening stand. The Originals’ innings faltered, collapsing from 90/1 to 128/4. A disciplined bowling performance from Mitchell Santner, who claimed 2/23, played a crucial role in this downturn. The most significant moment came on the 87th ball when Matty Potts bowled a brilliant yorker to Sikandar Raza. In an attempt to steal a quick single by the batters during the appeal for the LBW, Nicholas Pooran, wicketkeeper, shown the great presence of mind and  gathered the ball and threw down the stumps, resulting in Hurst’s run-out. Hurst, who was just short of his ground, departed after a stellar innings of 78.

An ultimate win in The Hundred 2024

This pivotal moment left the Originals needing 29 runs from 13 balls, a daunting task without their top scorer at the crease. Following Hurst’s departure, the Originals struggled to bridge the gap, ultimately finishing short of the target. This defeat left them winless and languishing at the bottom of the table. In contrast, the Superchargers, buoyed by their back-to-back victories, moved up to third place.
