His efforts were key in disrupting Sri Lanka’s momentum and after the game the Indian star lauded Suryakumar Yadav for his comp𒁏osed leadership and the freedom he grants his bowlers.
Describing Surya as a “bowler’s captain,” Axar appreciated the autonomy given to bowlers to set their fields and make on-the-spot decisions. This freedom allows bowlers to utilize their knowledge and instincts to strategize effectively. Furthermore, the captain’s unwavering support, even when bowlers face challenges like conceding runs, fosters a sense of security and trust. Axar valued the inputs and advice provided by Suryakumar, which enhances his performance and confidence on the field.
“I know that he’s a bowler’s captain. He gives the bowlers a free hand, to decide on their fields, and then backs them up even if they are hit. He gives you inputs. As a player, I’ve a good bond with him, and I’ve enjoyed playing under his captaincy too,” said Axar in the post-match presser.

A leader who empowers bowlers
Axar elaborates on a specific instance where Suryakumar’s consistent support was crucial. Despite a difficult start in a match, where Axar conceded quite a few runs in his first three overs, Surya’s approach remained steady and reassuring as he provided alternative strategies and options to help Axar recover and focus on taking wickets.
“Even today, I didn’t feel any change in his approach, when I was hit for runs in the first three overs, he told me what the other options were, and what can be done to get wickets. He said there’s no problem if you’re hit for a four or a six. As a bowler, that gives you confidence. If your captain backs you, then you can try out other things,” added Axar.
