Brian Lara, celebrated as one of cricket’s greatest batters, has left an indelible mark on the sport with his elegant stroke play and formidable batting prowess. The Trinidadian left-hander’s career spanned over a decade, during which he mesmerized fans and confounded bowlers with his ability to dominate any bowling attack.

Brian Lara’s monumental record: The 400-run milestone

Among Lara’s illustrious records, his monumental achievement of scoring 400 runs in a single Test innings stands as a testament to his batting genius. Lara achieved this feat against England in 2004, etching his name in cricketing history as the holder of the highest individual score in Test cricket.

Close calls and near misses

Since Lara’s record-breaking innings, quite a few batters have come close to surpassing the 400-run mark in Tests. Players like Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Inzamam-ul-Haq, and Sanath Jayasuriya have flirted with high scores but fell short of Lara’s milestone. The feat of scoring 400 runs remains a pinnacle that few have approached and none have surpassed.

Lara identifies potential record-breakers

In a recent statement to The Daily Mail, Lara identified two young Indian cricketers who possess the potential to break his record. Lara mentioned Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill as players capable of achieving this monumental milestone in Test cricket. Lara highlighted their aggressive batting styles and suggested that if they find themselves in the right conditions, these talented batsmen could rewrite the record books. Further, the Caribbean legend also picked two English batters – Harry Brook and Zak Crawley – to break his extravagant record.

“How many aggressive players do you have playing today? Especially in the England team. Zak Crawley and Harry Brook. Maybe in the Indian team? Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill. If they find the right situation, the records could be broken – both of them,” said Lara.
