Team India kicked off their campaign at the T20 World Cup 2024 in style after registering a dominating victory over Ireland at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on W𝕴ednesday.
Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah shine with the ball
Opting to bowl first, India made early inroads into the Irish batting lineup, reducing them to 96 all out in just 16 overs. Ireland struggled to build any substantial partnerships, with only Gareth Delany offering some resistance with a quickfire 26 off 14 balls, including two fours and two sixes. Curtis Campher chipped in with 12 off 8, featuring a six and a four, while Josh Little managed a modest 14 off 13.
The Indian bowlers were relentless, led by Hardik Pandya, who claimed three wickets for 27 runs in his four overs. Jasprit Bumrah was exceptional, conceding just six runs in his three overs while taking two crucial wickets. Arshdeep Singh also contributed with two wickets, although he was slightly expensive, giving away 35 runs. Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel addedꦯ to the woes of the Irish🧸 batsmen with one wicket each.
Rohit Sharma takes India home with a stunning fifty
Chasing a modest target of 97, India started confidently despite losing Virat Kohli early for just one run. Rohit Sharma played a captain’s knock, scoring 52 off 37 balls, decorated with four boundaries and three sixes. He was well-supported by Rishabh Pant, who remained unbeaten on 36 off 26 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes. Suryakumar Yadav, though brief at the crease, cont꧑ributed with two runs before falling to Ben White. Shivam Dube faced only two balls and remained not out on zero.
Ireland’s bowling attack lacked the potency to challenge the Indian batsmen. Mark Adair was the most successful bowler, taking one wicket for 27 runs in his four overs. Ben White managed to pick up the crucial wicket of Rohit but couldn’t stop the flow of runs. Little and Barry McCarthy were expensive, conceding 42 and 18 runs, respectively, with Little failing to ta🍎ke a wicket in his four overs.
India reached the target comfortably in 12.2 overs, sealing the win with eight wickets in hand. This comprehensive victory highlighted India’s prowess in all departments, reinforcing their status as strong contenders in the tournament.

Applause for Rohit Sharma's half-century. New York easily the most difficult pitch in the world. Not a good advertisement for cricket in US.
