In the 56th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday, Delhi Capitals (DC) clinched a 20-run victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR). Being asked to bat first, DC posted a formidable total of 221 runs for 8 wickets. Stellar performances from Jake Fraser-McGurk (50 off 20), Abhishek Porel (65 off 36), and Tristan Stubbs (41 off 20) powered their innings.
During the chase, RR’s Sanju Samson showcased brilliance with the bat, smashing 86 runs off 46 balls. Despite Samson’s remarkable innings, which featured 8 fours and 6 sixes, RR couldn’t find support from the rest of their batting lineup, ultimately falling short of the target. With this victory, DC kept their♍ hopes al꧅ive for qualifying for the playoffs.
Delhi Capitals in the points table
At present, DC occupy the fifth spot in the team standings, having accumulated 12 points, albeit with a worrisome net run rate (NRR) of -0.316. Despite sharing the same points with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), DC find themselves positione🧸d below these teams duཧe to their inferior NRR.
Playoffs qualification scenario for DC
DC need to emerge victorious in their remaining matches to secure a spot among the top four teams in the league stage. This would elevate their points tally to 16 and significantly enhance their chances of qualification. However, even if DC can manage to win just one out of their last two games, they could still qualify. In this scenario, their qualification would rely on favourable results from other teams’ matches to accomplish their objective.
Dependence on other teams
If DC manage to win only one of their two remaining matches, they will conclude the league stage with 14 points and have the opportunity to secure either the third or fourth position. In such a scenario, DC’s fate would hinge on the outcomes of matches involving CSK, SRH and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). If any tw🦋o of these teams reach 16 points, DC would be eliminated from contention.
Key factor of NRR
However, there’s still a chance for DC to qualify even if they lose both of their remaining games. In this case, their qualification would rely on their net run rate. With SRH facing LSG, one of these teams would secure at least 14 points and claim the third position. For DC to sneak into the top four, they would require CSK and the loser of the LSG vs SRH clash to lose all their remaining matches. It will result in three teams finishing with 12 points each, and the net run rate would then become the deciding factor.
