On Thursday (May 2), the Rajasthan Royals (RR) endured a heart-wrenching loss to the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Despite a valiant effort during the second innings, Rajasthan narrowly missed victory by just one run. The hero of the hour was Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose exceptional bowling in the final over, defendꦐingꦐ 13 runs, sealed the win for the Hyderabad.

Climactic final over: Dismissal of Rovman Powell

The climax of t😼he match unfolded with the final delivery from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, where Rajasthan needed 2 runs to win, a full toss directed at leg stump. Powell, facing the crucial moment, endeavoured to maneuver the ball towards the on-s𒁏ide but failed to connect, resulting in the ball striking his pads.

The on-field umpire adjudged him out, prompting Powell to employ the Decision Review System (DRS) to contest the decision. However, upon review, the third umpire upheld the on-field decision, confirming Powell’s dismissal. Despite Rajasthan’s efforts, they fell short, scoring 200/7 in response to Hyderabad’s 201/3.

Effect of DRS decision on total runs

Nevertheless, even if the DRS had favoured Powell and the on-field decision had been reversed, the runs scored by Powell wouldn’t have contributed to the Royals’ total.

This is due to the rule outlined in Appendix D of the International Cricket Council (ICC) playing conditions, which stipulates that if an original decision of ‘Out’ is changed to ‘Not Out’ following a player review, the ball is still considered dead at the moment the original decision was made. Consequently, any runs scored after that point are not added to the batting side’s total.

“If following a Player Review request, an original decision of ‘Out’ is changed to ‘Not Out’, then the ball is still deemed to have become dead when the original decision was made. The batting side, while benefiting from the reversal of the dismissal, shall not benefit from any runs that may subsequently have accrued from the delivery had the on-field umpire originally,” the law reads.

Therefore, the batting side does not benefit from any runs that may subsequently have accrued from the delivery. That’s why regardless of the outcome of the DRS review, Rajasthan would have still lost by one run in this particular match.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s heroics in the IPL 2024

Overall the match was a riveting spectacle that concluded with a narrow defeat for the Rajasthan, with Yashasvi Jaiswal impressing with a score of 67, complemented by Riyan Parag‘s efforts. Bhuvneshwar’s stellar performance, picking three wickets, earned him the well-deserved title of Player of the Match for Hyderabad.
