Fortune Barishal made history by winning their first-ever Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) title, overcoming Comilla Victorians with a six-wicket victory in an exhilarating final at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Friday (March 1). The defeat dashed the Victorians’ aspirations for a third consecutive BPL trophy.

Comilla Victorians’ struggles in the BPL 2024 final

Choosing to bat after losing the toss, Victorians faced a challenging start as Kyle Mayers dismissed Sunil Narine in the opening over after just scoring 5 runs. Tauheed Hriday contributed 15 runs before being dismissed at the team score of 30. Captain Liton Das (16 ) and Johnson Charles (15) couldn’t capitalize, and Moeen Ali‘s run-out at when the team was at 79 further deepened Victorians’ woes. James Fuller‘s impactful bowling performance, taking two wickets, limited Victorians to a score of 154.

Fortune Barishal’s dominant chase: Kyle Mayers’ impactful performance

In response, Barishal had a strong start in their pursuit of the target. Openers Tamim Iqbal and Mehdi Hasan Miraj forged a solid 76-run partnership. Tamim’s quick 39 runs innings and Miraj’s contribution of 29 runs set a solid foundation.

Mayers then took charge, playing aggressively and scoring 46 runs in just 30 balls, bringing the score to 141. Despite Mushfiqur Rahim‘s departure after scoring 13 runs, Mahmudullah and David Miller regsitered victory with one over to spare. Mayers’ aggressive batting not only propelled Barishal to victory but also earned him the Player of the Match award.

Tamim Iqbal shines throughout the tournament

Tamim’s consistent and impactful displays across the tournament earned him the Player of the Tournament title. Accumulating 492 runs in 15 innings at an average of 35.14 and an impressive strike rate of 127.13, Tamim played a pivotal role in Barishal’s successful BPL campaign.
