Rajasthan Royals (RR) got off to a dream start in their IPL 2024 opener against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), thanks to some brilliant bowling by Trent Boult and a spectacular knock by Sanju Samson.
Trent Boult’s bountiful opening spell
New Zealand’s pace ace Trent Boult lived up to his reputation, proving to be a menace with the new ball. In an exceptional opening spell, he dismissed two left-handed batters Quinton de Kock and Devdutt Padikkal, showcasing his strategic brilliance.
De Kock’s dismissal came early, on the fifth ball of LSG’s first over. Padikkal, however, faced a more cunning ploy. Boult first surprised him with a bouncer that broke his helmet.

Trent Boult: King of the first over
This masterful display reinforces Boult’s dominance in the IPL since 2020. His lethal opening spells have yielded an impressive 23 wickets in the first over alone, making him the most feared bowler with the new ball.
Sanju Samson’s scintillating knock
Chasing a strong total was always going to be challenging for LSG, especially after Boult’s early assault. Adding to their woes was a scintillating batting performance by RR skipper, Sanju Samson.
Samson continued his blazing form with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 82 off just 52 balls in RR’s first match of the IPL 2024 season. His knock was a masterclass in power hitting, featuring 6 massive sixes and 3 fours. Samson’s aggressive batting provided both momentum and stability to the Royals innings, particularly after losing two wickets in the powerplay.
A solid 93-run partnership between Samson and Riyan Parag (43 off 29 balls) solidified the Royals’ innings. Their combined efforts helped the team post a competitive total of 193 for 4 on the board.
