IPL franchise Mumbai Indians (MI)‘s bold decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as the new captain for IPL 2024, displacing the seasoned Rohit Sharma, ignited a widespread controversy within the cricketing community. The move sparked divergent opinions among fans and observers alike. While a significant portion of supporters openly criticized the team’s decision, citing the long-standing success and leadership prowess of Rohit, another faction rallied in favour of this strategic shift.
The appointment of a new captain always invites speculation and analysis, and former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has added his perspective to the discourse. With a keen eye for the game, the legendary player has offered i꧋nsights into the potential reasons behind this significant development.
‘Rohit Sharma is already 36 years old’: Sunil Gavaskar
In assessing the strategic decisions made by MI, Gavaskar pointed out the forward-thinking approach the franchise took. Given Rohit’s age at 36 and his significant responsibilities as the captain across all three formats for the India cricket team, the MI has sought to alleviate some of that pressure by entrusting leadership responsibilities to the younger and dynamic Hardik.
“Look, they have always thought about the future of the franchise. Rohit Sharma is already 36 years old and also faces immense pressure, being the captain of India for all three formats. They have tried to reduce some of that burden and give that responsibility on the young shoulders of Hardik Pandya,” Gavaskar opined while speaking on Star Sports.

‘It will only going to benefit the Mumbai Indians’: Gavaskar
Gavaskar further highlighted the potential benefits of assigning the captaincy to Hardik for the MI. According to him, this decision will offer Rohit the freedom to🔯 express himself at the top of the order. At the same time, the new skipper can contribute effectively at positions like No.3 or No.5, enabling the♎ team to post imposing totals of 200-plus consistently.
“Handing Hardik, the captaincy is only going to benefit the Mumbai Indians. They have now given the freedom to Rohit to go and express himself freely at the top of the order. Hardik can then come at No.3 or No.5 and help them post totals of 200-plus consistently,” the 74-year-old added.
