Ricky Ponting, the legendary Australian captain and current coach of Delhi Capitals (DC), shared insights into the comprehensive success of filling crucial roles during the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena.
Franchise’s strategic decision post retention deadline
Following their strategic decision to release ten players before the retention deadline, the Capitals aimed to address the gaps in their squad and improve on their second-from-bottom performance in the previous season’s points table. The franchise made key decisions during the auction to strengthen specific areas and create a competitive team for the upcoming season. The Capitals strategically signed nine players for the upcoming season.
Ricky Ponting’s emphasis on successful role fulfillment
Speaking in a video released by DC after the auction, Ponting highlighted the effectiveness of the Capitals’ auction strategy, emphasizing that the squad successfully filled all the identified gaps. He expressed satisfaction with a phenomenal 90% success rate in securing their desired players throughout the auction, showcasing the team’s strategic planning and execution.
“We filled all the gaps that we wanted and saved nearly 10 crore, so the owners are really happy about it. We probably got 90 per cent of exactly what we wanted. We’ve done a great job,” Ponting said.

Priority purchase
Ponting revealed that purchasing hard-hitting England batter Harry Brook was the franchise’s number one priority at the IPL 2024 auction. He expressed happiness at DC being able to acquire Brook at a favorable price, considering his potential impact on the team’s batting lineup.
“I was excited about Harry Brook. I think he is one of the most talented international cricketers in the world at the moment. He was our number 1 priority today and we got him for a whole lot cheaper than we expected to. So, I’m really excited to work with him,” the 49-year-old concluded.
Notable auction acquisitions
Apart from Brook, the Capitals secured other notable players during the auction, including Australian pacer Jhye Richardson for INR 5 crore, West Indian wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope for INR 75 lakh, and uncapped Indian wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra for INR 7.2 crore. These acquisitions add depth and versatility to the Capitals’ squad for the upcoming IPL season.
