In a noteworthy development, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has taken decisive action by imposing sanctions and deferring the national contracts of three prominent cricketers. These players were integral members of Afghanistan’s squad that participated in the ODI World Cup 2023.
ACB’ strict action
ACB has taken disciplinary action against cricketers Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-Ul-Haq, accusing them of allegedly prioritising personal interests over their commitment to plꦐaying for the national team. As a consequence, the organisation has opted to defer their annuꦯal central contracts for the year 2024. Additionally, the board has declared a two-year suspension on issuing No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for the trio, including the revocation of any existing NOCs they may currently hold.
This stern decision underscores the ACB’s resolve to ensure players uphold their dedication to representing Afghanistan in international cricket and places a clear emphasis on the repercussions for actions perceived as contrary to the team’s interests.
ACB’ statement
ACB clearly explained that the players’ refusal to sign central contracts due to participation in commercial leagues, prioritising personal interests over national responsibility, led to these developments.
“The insistence on not signing the central contract for these players was their involvement in commercial leagues, prioritising their personal interests over playing for Afghanistan, which is regarded as a national responsibility, by opting for their release, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has decided to take disciplinary measures against these players,” ACB said as quoted in their statement.

IPL prospect of sanctioned players
Underscoring the IPL prospect of these cricketers, Mujeeb was recently picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL auction 2024 for INR 2 crore and is currently showcasing his skills in the Big Bash League (BBL) with the Melbourne Renegades. Naveen is associated with the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and Farooqi is retained by the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
