England faced off against their arch-rivals Australia in a thrilling 36th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday (November 4). Although the day witnessed a fiercely fought battle between the two cricketing powerhꦇouses, it was Australia who managed to 🐓pull off a win in the end as they defeated England by 33 runs.
Marnus Labushchagne’s brilliant batting and Chris Woakes’ fightback
Asked to bat first, Australia’s batting performance in this crucial match was spearheaded by Marnus Labuschagne, who scored an impressive 71 runs from 83 balls. Meanwhile, Steve Smith’s 44 from 52 balls and Cameron Green’s aggressive 47 from 52 balls further provided stability to the Aussie innings. Despite their calculated risks and partnerships, Australia couldn’t manage to build on the momentum and were eventually bundled out for 286 in 49.3 overs.
Chris Woakes was the standout bowler for England and displayed commendable determination, bagging four wickets for 54 runs. Adil Rashid and Mark Wood also chipped in with two wickets each. However, the Australian batter’s resilience and a few crucial partnerships proved to be the difference in the first innings.

England’s resilience and Adam Zampa’s masterclass
In reply, England showed great promise at various points throughout their innings. Dawid Malan was the first one to take the charge for England with a well-constructed 50 from 64 balls. The ever-reliable Ben Stokes played a crucial innings, scoring 64 runs from 90 balls, which included some stunning strokes and powerful hitting. Moeen Ali chipped in with a handy 42 from 43 balls. Nevertheless, none could stay till the end, and wickets kept falling at regular intervals, leading to Australia’s victory.
The hero of the Australian bowling attack was Adam Zampa, who delivered a match-winning performance. Zampa picked up three crucial wickets for just 21 runs in his ten overs, applying immense pressure on the English batters and ultimately securing Australia’s victory. His spell was a masterclass in spin bowling, making it extremely challenging for England to build partnerships and chase down the target as they were bundled out for 252 in 48.1 overs.

England's game against Pakistan could become very interesting with Pakistan looking for a win (most likely a large win) to qualify for the semis and England needing a win to qualify for the Champions Trophy.

England entered the tournament as defending champions but faced a tough start with a loss in their 1st game at Ahmedabad. It's quite symbolic that their elimination from the tournament occurred at the same venue.
