In a stunning display of power-hitting, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell shattered multiple records as he powered his team to a majestic win against Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup 2023 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

A blistering knock from Glenn Maxwell

Maxwell’s extraordinary performance was nothing short of a cricketing spectacle. Facing cramps and a struggling team at 91/7 while chasing a target of 292, Maxwell single-handedly rescued Australia. His aggressive batting style and unwavering determination carried the team to victory.

In a match where he shared a crucial 202-run partnership with skipper Pat Cummins, it was Maxwell who did the bulk of the 😼scoring. With a splendid knock, the 𓃲Victorian also smashed numerous records:

First Australian to score an ODI double-century

With this remarkable feat, Maxwell became the first Australian player to score a double-century in the ODIs. He surpassed Shane Watson, who held the previous record with an unbeaten 185* against Banglaꦐdesh in 2011 in Mirpur.

First non-opener to smash an ODI double-ton

Another feather in Maxwell’s cap is becoming the first non-opener to score a double-century in ODI cricket. The highest ODI score by a non-opener before this was Zimbabwe’s Charles Coventry‘s 194* against Bangladesh in 2009. Maxwell also broke the record previously held by Indian legend Kapil Dev, who scored 175* from the number six or lower position against Zimb💜abwe in the 1983 World Cup.

Third player with a double-ton in the World Cup

In the context of ODI World Cups, Maxwell has joined an exclusive club, becoming the third player to slam a double-century. New Zealand’s Martin Guptill (237* vs West Indies in 2015) and West Indies’ Chris Gayle (215 vs Zimbabwe🃏 in 2015) were the two others who achieved this remarkable milestone.

Highest individual score in run-chases

Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 off 128 balls included 21 boundaries and 10 sixes. This incredible innings now stands as the highest individual score in a run-chase in ODI cricket. Maxwell surpassed Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman, who scored 193 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2021. In World Cup history, the previous record was held by England’s Andrew Strauss, who scored 158 against India in 2011.

Fastest Double Hundreds in ODIs (by balls)

Maxwell’s double century came off just 128 balls, making it the second-fastest in ODI history. The current record holder for the fastest double century is India’s Ishan Kishan, who reached the milestone in 126ꦺ balls against Bangladesh in 2022.

Highest individual scores in World Cups

Maxwell’s unbeaten 201* now ranks as the third-highest individual score in World Cup history. The top two positions are held by Guptill and Gayle.

Most sixes in an innings

Maxwell also smashed 10 sixes during his incredible innings, setting a new record for the most sixes by an Australian in a World Cup match. The overall record for the most sixes in a World Cup innings is held by England’s Eoin Morgan, who hit 17 sixes against Afghanistan in 2019.
