Indian cricket legend Kris Srikkanth is known for his blunt behaviour and never shies away from speaking his mind. Srikkanth recently offered a candid piece of advice to Team India regarding the ODI debut of the highly talented youngster Tilak Varma. The v🎐eteran cricketer urged the Men in Blue not to hand Tilak his maiden ODI debut cap in any big cricketing event.
It is worth mentioning that Tilak has been included in India’s 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and is the center of attentio🅺n for his maiden call-up into the ODI setup. The much-anticipated marquee event will commence from August 30, with India kicking off their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2.
As anticipation builds for the forthcoming tournament, all eyes rܫemain on Tilak after his great outing in the T20I series against West Indies. The left-handed batter amassed 173 runs against the Caribbean side at an impre꧟ssive average of 57.67 and would surely be hopeful of getting an opportunity in the marquee event.
Kris Srikkanth’s blunt advice to Team India regarding Tilak Varma’s ODI debut
Tilak’s performance in the Asia Cup 2023 could hold the key to his future in the Indian cricket setup. A strong showing in the tournament might convince the selectors to consider him for a spot in the ODI World Cup 2023 squad. However, India’s legendary batter Srikkanth has advised India not to consider Tilak for their World Cup playing XI and instead groom him for the future.
Don’t let him be in the playing lineup for the World Cup
Acknowledging Tilak’s skills, Srikanth emphasized that India should test Tilak in a few bilateral ODI series before trying him at some big event. He highlighted that by giving Tilak the chance to acclimatize to international cricket in small events, the selectors can ensure that he gains valuable experience and develops the confidence necessary to excel on the grand stage.
“Tilak Varma, the point that I’m making was also conveyed by Ganguly. Don’t give him a debut in a big tournament. First, let him play a few ODI series. Ganguly also had the same point of view,” Srikkanth told India Today.
“Tilak Varma has fantastic potential. He is a brilliant player. But don’t let him be in the playing lineup for the World Cup. Let him play in a few ODI series and then the upcoming T20 World Cup and groom him till the next ODI World Cup. There is something called grooming a youngster,” he added.
