The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has unveiled a formidable 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. The announcement was made by BCB Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin on Saturday (August 12).
Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder, Shakib al Hasan, has been entrusted with the leadership role and will don the captain’s armband for the prestigious Asian event.
Tanzid Hasan gets his maiden call-up
The young prodigy Tanzid Hasan gained a maiden call-up to the ODI side for the upcoming event. It is worth mentioning that Tanzid came in as a cover for injured Tamim Iqbal. The former Bangladesh skipper recently resigned from the captain’s post and is currently recovering from a back injury.

In addition to Tanzid, the selectors have strategically opted for a blend of seasoned campaigners and promising talents. Shamim Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, and Nasum Ahmed make a return to the squad, further bolstering Bangladesh’s capabilities. Meaanhwile, the inclusion of Mohammad Naim provides a dependable top-order batting option.
Exclusion of seasoned campaigner Mahudullah Riyad:
However, the absence of veteran Mahmudullah Riyad has raised a few eyebrows. The all-rounder last played ODIs against England in March of this year and missed out on subsequent series against Ireland and Afghanistan due to ongoing concerns about his fo♓rm and fitness.
Retention of the core
The squad also features several familiar faces like Litton Das, Naim Sheikh, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tawhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, and Mustafizur Rahman, who form the core of the꧙ team and have been retained due to their consistent performances and valuable contributions.
The squad is further reinforced by the inclusion of talented players such as Afif Hossain, Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam, indicating the team’s intent to make an impact in the Asia Cup 2023.
