On the opening day of the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford, Australia’s lower-order displayed great resilience, frustrating England and finishing the day at 299-8 on Wednesday.

With Australia leading the five-match series 2-1, England’s hopes of retaining the Ashes hinge on securing a victory in Manchester. However, unfavourable weather forecasts for the weekend have added to the pressure, potentially requiring a quick breakthrough for England on Day 2.

The pendulum of momentum swung back and forth throughout the day, with key Australian batters Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh all looking set🍸 for significant scores before England managed to halt their progress.

Despite being seven wickets down with only one and a half hours remaining on the day, Australia’s lower-order remained resilient, thwarting England’s attempts to make further inroads. The tourists’ batters will resume their innings on Thursday, hoping to post a competitive total.

Chris Woakes proved to be the star for England, picking up four Austraꦬlian wickets and continuing his brilliance in red-ball cricket.

However, the home crowd favourite, James Anderson, making his return to the🐻 England side, was left frustrated as h🎉e bowled 17 overs, conceded 43 runs and failed to take a wicket.

As the Ashes battle intensifies, both teams will look to make the most of their opportunities in the rema♚ining fourth Test. Cricket fans around the world eagerly await another day of enthralling cricketing a🌃ction at Old Trafford, knowing that every moment will be vital in determining the outcome of the series.

Brief scores: Australia 299-8 (Mitchell Marsh 51, Marnus Labu✱schagne 51; Chris Woakes 4/52) vs England.
