Shubman Gill with a stunning century, and Virat Kohli‘s classy fifty helped India’s robust reply to Australia on Day 3 of the ongoing fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad.
After conceding 480 in the first innings against Australia, the hosts bounced back in grand style. Gill was the star of the day, notching up his second hundred in the longest format. He, along with captain Rohit Sharma signalled their attacking intent after๊ resuming on 36/0 on Day 3 of the match.
Left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann broke the 74-run opening stand by dismissing Rohit, who made 35 runs. Gill then partnered with Cheteshwar Pujara as the duo consolidated India’s position.
Gill smashed a ton with a four off Todd Murphy. However, in the same over, the spinner got rid ofꦚ Pujara, who fell lbw for 42. The star opener, who was dismissed for 128. featured in three 50-plus partnerships as India, who lead the series 2-1, reached 289/3 at stumps. Kohli was unbeaten on 59, his first test half-century in 16 innings, with Ravindra Jadeja on 16 as India are still 191 behind.
“It feels great to score a hundred here. This is my IPL home ground and glad to get some runs here. The pitch was pretty good to bat on. Anything happening off the pitch was off the rough area. I was looking to pick singles whenever possible. Honestly, I was still trying to be positive and was keep looking for singles. They weren’t attacking that much. We are three down for almost 300. We would look to get a big score on day 4. Who knows the wicket might help our bowlers on day 5,” said Gill after the end of the day’s play.
